Wiper Position

Featured Replies

Anyone have any idea to explain that sometimes when I leave my car parked I return to find the wipers in the "upright" position. They go back down when I start the car and "flick" the wipers but it seems strange. Doesn't happen when parked iin my garage.

What do you mean m8. Do they go up by Themselves when you leave the car?

Sometimes my left wiper settles just in view at the bottom of the screen after it's wiped. After a few seconds (always the same period) it will tuck right the way back down. Anyone else get this? I've got the rain sensitive wipers. It's almost like it's going down to a standby position ready to wipe again, but then when it decides it doesn't need to wipe again it goes fully down. :)

Rain sensitive wipers always seem to do odd things. Mine always give an unexpected extra wipe after using washers. I suppose it reads the dribbles of washer fluid coming down the screen.

But the only time I've seen the wipers parked at 12 0'clock is when I switched off the ignition with them still working.

The car is an L&K with auto wipers. I leave the car with the wipers in the parked position and, occasionally, when I return to the car the wipers are in the "up" position. Very strange and there doesn't seem to be any obvious reason - wondered if anyone else had the same, hardly a fault but strange!!

By "up" do you mean visible - just above the lower windscreen edge rather than tucked away out of sight - or vertical?

The Octavia 2 has an alternate parking position. Every other time the blade is parked the motor flicks the blades so they 'lie' on the other wiping surface, it prolongs the life of the blade.

If the blades are paring upright you have flicked them into service position (this is how the blades are changed as when parked normally you cant lift the blade up).

I thought this was a design feature with modern systems - gives you a an extra wipe after a few seconds to clear up the last few dribbles after a screenwash.

Or alternatively and infuriatingly to add a few final streaky marks to an otherwise clean screen...

It does EXACTLY that!!!

Is anybody else having problems with the pain in the a** that is the autowipers? Mine sometimes only decide to work it I flick the little rotary switch on top of the stalk even when I sometimes start to struggle to see out of the screen because of rain and othertimes they go crazy and refuse to stop? Why is the variable intermittent wipe speed switch still on the stalk? I ask this because I'm too lazy to read the manual lol!

Mine are pretty useless too, and seem to be worse in the dark! Number of times I find myself having to override them just to see where I'm going makes me start wishing I didn't have them.

What's really annoying is that I had them on my Superb and they were (sorry) superb! So what have they changed? Whatever it is I wish they hadn't.

Oh - and the the variable switch is allegedly to affect the sensitivity of the rain sensor (yeah, right)

My rain sensitive wipers work fine.

If you dont like the secondary wipe pop into your local dealer and they will code it out for you.

Back to the Expatman's original question, mine did exactly the same this morning after driving into work in the snow. They parked right at the top of the stroke (i.e 90 degrees to their parked position) about a second after I'd turned the ignition off and withdrawn the key. I thought they'd gone on the blink but then twigged. It's so you can lift them off the screen so the rubbber doesn't freeze to the glass aswhen they park below the lip of the bonnet, it's not possible to lift them. I've only had the car two weeks and never seen it before so I assume it only does it when you've used the wipers that journey and it's below 0'C..... Damn clever these Germans.

My rain sensitive wipers also seem to have a mind of their own - twiddling the variable control on the stalk can improve things but if it's dry the weekend I'm going to Rainex the screen and see if that helps.

Same views as you and patnmand.

In very light dizzle they seem to wipe too frequently and in light rain they don't wipe frequently enough. Once it is raining steadily they are fine.

I sometimes get a "rougue" wipe when it is not raining, I can only assume that some trick of the light makes the sensor think that there is rain on the screen.

Modern technology!

Best system I've come across so far, on US rental car, was a control you rotate when wipers put on intermittant. Instead of giving 3 or 4 different "slow" wipe speeds it was more or less infinitely variable, like adjusting a rheostat or volume control, so you set speed to suit conditions.

The rain sensitive wipers were brilliant on my old Primera, they reacted really quickly to spray and the like such as overtaking a lorry in the wet.

The only time they went mad was when a bird crapped on the sensor.

Have you thought that perhaps these cars are to complicated for us humans to drive?

I would suggest you do not kick the tires or swear at your car or you may find it refuses to either let you in or out until it gets a suitable apology.

Question while waiting for our new Octy 2 - is there any way you can switch off the sensing bit of the rain-sensing wipers? They sound like a load of aggravation and I'm perfectly capable of deciding how and when to work them myself. Being doing it for 40+ years - what do the whippersnappers know that I don't?

Question for the techs. What happens if you cover up the sensor? Do they go back to running according to the intermittant switch positions or just stop altogether?

I asked the dealer that question and he said it could be turned off, I can't remember how though (I'm sure someone can confirm that :) )

Come on, Lummox....

I've tried black tape on the windscreen over the sensor but it just wipes once when you move the column stalk to the auto position and then does nothing else.

You didn't take her out again did you? :D
