Replace alloy or refurb?

Featured Replies

Had a brain fart incident this afternoon going through a width restriction in Marlow and kerbed by N/S/F Sirus alloy (19 inch)

It's not too bad but 75% of the edge has damaged and perhaps one of the spokes has been marked aswell.

Thing is I need my car everyday for work and don't have a spare so am going to struggle to get a refurb done in a day. Not really going to get a good luck until I can clean the car & wheels but a quick check on the way home confirmed my fears. Luckily the balancing hasn't been effected so day to day usage isn't compromised.

What do you think my options are? I reckon a new one will be in excess of £200.

€329 each from Superskoda so possibly more in U.K.? Sounds like you have found somebody's Xmas pressie then. Sorted :-)

If you can run on it until the new year that might give you other options time wise - and you might not source a replacement between then and now anyway.

Is it a company car? If it's only scuffed I'd be leaving it as it?

It's a company one but I treat it like my own and look after it well. Got it for the next 3 1/2 years

Try and get it refurbed if you can.  A dedicated alloy wheel place should be able to at least assess the damage and let you know if they can fix it.  I wouldn't even look at a 'smart' repair/mobile option such as Wheel Genie, Chips Away, etc.  A dedicated wheel specialist will be cheaper and the wheel will be fully stripped, filled, baked and sprayed several times in order to get a long lasting repair.   A reputable, company will also know what they are looking at and can at least tell you if the wheel is compromised and should be replaced.

You might get lucky on eBay or a Skoda dealer in finding a replacement wheel.  I needed to find a replacement for the 18" 'Performance' alloy on my Leon and couldn't find one 2nd hand so had to spend £300 from a dealer in Ireland (SERE), the SRP for the wheel is £390 and even my local TPS wanted £365 for one.

Ask the dealer for their parts price and their accessories price. There is usually quite a difference. Mine (albeit an SII) an L&K 18" is £370 on one list and £180 on the other!

I've gone through the Briskoda Parts (on here) for an initial price.

My neighbour runs a bodyshop so I will ask him when I see him.

I had to get my diamond-cut alloys refinished before my leased E-class went back to Mercedes -- I used Diamond Alloys in Northolt (because I live there!) who did an excellent job for the price and time quoted.

You always have the option of buying a new one, get the current refurbed in your own time, (then you have a spare, or sell on ebay to get some cash back...)

That's my current thinking if I can pick up one at a reasonable price.

I would get it refurbished, this will be less than £100 for a pro job... but will take a couple of days.

The only issue there is a 235 tyre will not fit (flush) under the boot floor.

For spare.. I meant for next time rather than a spare wheel :)

Next time?  :o

The Sirius wheel is listed as a "part" by Skoda (at the minute) and therefore attracts a higher price of £390 each (inc VAT and delivery). That's from the Briskoda Parts team (Listers)

Not seen my neighbour yet but looks like refurb will be the cheaper option!

Once I've sorted this I'm hoping there won't be a "next time".

that will be refurbed as good as new ive no doubt.

its really minor cosmetic damage for an experienced refurber.

I scratched my front left with 400 miles on the clock.  I took it to a local reputable alloy refurb company who charged £80 and it's as good as new.

steer clear of the companies who come out to you.  Having seen all the different stages and machines this company used - there's no way they can fit that in a van!!  A lot of cheaper options use paint rather than strip and bring the wheel back to its original state.   I guess it will be a lot cheaper than getting a new wheel.

On a previous car I used a local outfit with a, supposedly, good reputation (and I'm not far from you Mike 2105) and they made a right pigs ear of my wheels. Unfortunately this didn't show for about 18 months and when I approached them they weren't really interested apart from taking another £300+ off me. Their suggestion was that I had used "hand car wash" sites and their inferior products had caused the reaction (I had done so on a few occasions but generally wash cars myself). Ended up taking it to a small place on Canvey Island who did a brilliant job (from the outside of the unit you might have different opinions of how the work might have turned out!)

Yes. Refurbished, repaired, what ever you want to call it.

I know that bridge width restriction very well, it catches out so many vehicles but at least you didn't try tackle it in an articulated lorry - http://www.bucksfreepress.co.uk/news/14767095._Worst_case_scenario__could_see_damaged_bridge_closed_for_up_to_six_months/

Ditto mate, you look after it and with the intention of being looked after yourself again.

Probably one of the tightest width restrictions I've ever been through mate. Really had to breath in to get through it, had a momentary lapse on concentration resulting in the damage.

Can't say I have been thru it in my current Octavia or my last but I did in my Astra and each time I did, I almost shut my eyes and winced waiting for the scraping!
