Rotational thudding noise from front, head is mashed!

Featured Replies

Hey chaps.

i really need some help/advice with this as im now out of ideas and im sick of putting money into it and not solving the problem/noise! So here goes..

My mk1 VRS has a rotational thump coming from the front driver side. Think of it like tapping your hand/fingers on your knee but louder.

The faster you go the quicker and louder it gets, so 100% related to road speed BUT it is only really noticeable when turning right, yeah you can just hear it when going straight but alot worse when turning right, i cant pick much up when turning left.

Parts i have replaced so far:

Both wishbones + ball joints.

Both drop links.

Driver side CV joint, wheel bearing and TRE

and its still there!! Garage is as stumpped as me, their is no play in the wheel and it wont make the noise on the ramp when ran up to speed so it is only when the car is on the ground.

only thing i have not done is swap wheels round to see if it is tyre/alloy related, that is next to do although i don't see how a problem with the wheel would be worse when turning right only.

my mind is boggled, i really cant think of anything else.. which is where you guys come in. Maybe one of you has had the same issue etc

One other thing i have noticed, when driving on broken road, where the tarmac is cracked/broken etc and you accelerate hard the ASC kicks in and the drivers wheel seems to loose traction and feels like its wobbling alover like a shopping trolly wheel, when this happens there is alot of knocking/juddering through the steering wheel, feels like the bar from the wheel to rack is juddering (best way i can think to descibe it!) weather this is linked or not i don't know.

as i said, i don't want to keep throwing money at it and not solving the issue so im hopping you guys can perhaps point me in the right direction or atleast give me some more things to check that i may not of thought of.

I have tried to explain best i can but will answer any questions to the best of my knowledge.

Thanks guys!

Which cv joint was replaced?

It's reasonably easy to check, so check the condition and air gap of the ABS rotor and sensor on the side that has the new CV.

That sounds a like a slack wheel to me, but Id be loathe to say that when a garage has been looking at it as they won't have left it slack and you'd get some play in the wheel

The outer drivers side.

Not quite sure what you mean by air gap etc?

Not quite sure what you mean by air gap etc?

The ABS sensors have 2 parts, a rotor (sometimes chopper disc) that goes round with the wheel, and a sensor attached to the upright. There is an air gap between them, and this being correct and consistent is important to correct functioning of your ABS and traction control. If it's wrong or the rotor is damaged or dirty, you can get pulsing through the brake pedal, and/or vibrations under power. Either way, with a new RH wheel bearing and CV, it needs to be set up correctly.

Get you now, thanks i will get it checked.

Do you know roughly how much of a gap there should be?

I will add, it done this before the new CV etc.

The outer drivers side.

I had the inner one fail on my old car.

Any way to check this? i thought it just bolted to the box as was no inner cv joint listed as a replacement part.

Not sure, I was thinking of the mkII.

looks like i can get an inner CV joint from JnR, will add that to the list.

I ended up just changing the whole driveshaft.

i would but be pointless now that ive just had the outer CV done lol

I would say its almost certainly tyre/wheel related. the tyre may have gone oval after hitting a bump /pothole etc, or simply through manufacturing failure..... my guess would be an oval tyre or damaged wheel...

Well in my mind it is the only thing left to check!

I intend on swapping the wheels on the front axle either tomorrow or the next day so will soon find out.

If it is, i have a full size spare alloy + tyqe so easy to sort :)

I had this on my Laguna estate, above thirty there was a drumming sound linked to speed , had bearings etc replaced, still there. Ended up changing the rear tyres and it went away, looked at the tyre that came off and it was unevenly worn and a weird shape.
