Losing coolant

Featured Replies

Hi I've owned my vrs since September now it's the 2.0l petrol on a 2006 it has full service history and drives like a dream. I have noticed that I am losing coolant but there are no obvious leaks, I have had to fill it twice over the past 6 weeks as the warning light came on and when I checked the level it was below minimum

This is the first skoda I have ever owned so obviously I don't no where to start with trouble shooting or weather this is a common fault and something needs changing etc.i don't want to take it strate to the garage without having some sort of clue as to what it could be caused by

It has had a stage 1 remap and has an induction kit too , could it be something to do with that? I really don't mean to sound thick but I just don't no these cars yet so I'm kinda scratching my head, could it be the water pump? It's done 94 thousand miles if that helps?

Any advice welcome

Thank you

An intermittent leak from the bottom corner of the radiator is not unusual and can be hard to spot.

Thank you for the advice

Cap on top can give way under pressure without too many signs. Pretty cheap thing to change without breaking the bank if you get stuck.

Are the front carpets wet indicating a hearer matrix leak?

Front carpets bone dry.

When you say "cap on top" are you meaning the actual filler cap? It's tight on doesn't look like it's given way

Yes, that cap. Doesn't have to be loose to lose coolant. If I've got this right, there's summat in it which is designed to release when overpressured, and that bit can 'give' with age which leads to it venting prematurely causing it to look like you've got a leak cos the fluid level drops. Experienced it on a MkII golf, changed the cap, my 'leak' miraculously stopped. Had a problem with a coolant drop a few weeks ago and if it wasn't for the fact you could see the leak underneath, around the water pump, this was gonna be my next default attempted fix.

Water pump leak.  The coolant leaks out into the cam belt cover and evaporates away, so you don't see anything on the outside.

Quite probably, was on mine (although mine was visible from the overflow hole on the pump and I've got a chain so I didn't have to replace the belt at expense as well), but unless I could find that out for sure for free, a ten pound cap is a lot less painful to try than changing a pump, belt, etc. Pump replacement cost me about £240 from the dealers to change, and was cheaper than any independent, strangely enough.

mine had a leak on the header tank. Mind you it was split! I'd have a look at that.

It's just really weird because the level will be bang on for weeks then all of a sudden empty it's not like its gradually goin down like a leak would be

Mine was like that. Might not lose anything for a couple of weeks, then it would drop in a day or two.

By chance I spotted some drops of coolant on the bottom edge of the front bumper under the car just after I got home

So what was needed fixing mate?

So what was needed fixing mate?

New radiator, but as this was just a couple of days before I was going away I tried a bottle of K seal. It worked but I ended up getting rid of the car before I did anything more.
