I have recently brought a MK 1 Octavia VRS and was just looking for a bit of advice.

The air filter that is on the car is a k&n filter directly attached to where the original air box would be. I know this set up is not good but am unsure what to replace it with for sensible money?

Also going to do an oil change, oil filter, oil pick up pipe clean the throttle body and new fuel filter.

What else would be advisable ?

Also would I need to change the turbo feed pipe when I remove the oil sump to make sure the turbo stayes in good working order

If you're removing the sump, installing a new oil pick up pipe would be beneficial.

With the work above, I'd also change spark plugs and cabin/pollen filter.

Have a look around the car really, suspension bushes etc and see what looks on bad shape.

I would personally go down your local scrappy and get a stock air box, a lot of people have problems with out them as it is sucking in hot air directly from the engine bay negatively affecting performance.

For the money of a new oil pipe, just replace it, the old one can be hard to properly clean out.

When cleaning the throttlebody, it may pay to get a new gasket first, you can normally get away with the old one, but it's up to you if you want to risk it. Also DO NOT disconnect it electronically! This has caused rough idling on some cars that even the Vag com reset has not fixed. New TB are not cheap.

Cleaning the MAF and IAT sensor is a virtually free task and can yield noticeable gains.

While you're at it Check the vacuum lines, especially the ones under the IM, for rips as they are not uncommon and can go noticed for a long time. PCV pipes are notorious for splitting and I'd be surprised if there isn't a hole in one/ blocked up at some point.

If you're feeling super keen clean up the earth points, big ones are the ones under the battery tray, one on r/h side on engine (as you look from front of car) and the one on top of the engine by the coil packs.

If you're feeling in the mood for some preventative maintenance then Check you have a green coolant temp sensor as this is the latest revision, also revision "D" coilpacks. Older ones were prone to failure.

Your temp gauge should read a rock solid 90 once warmed up, if it drops lower while driving, switch the thermostat.

May have gone over the top a bit here, just done the yearly spruce up on mine lol :)

Either buy a stock airbox, or buy an eBay CAI and stick the K&N filter on the end of it
