Clicking CV Joint?

Featured Replies

Anyone suffered from a clicking CV joint? When applying the throttle lightly and then off, in say slow moving traffic there is a noticeable clicking.

Definitely rhs

Had top mounts done as it sounded like it could be that and checked ball joints etc

It's only when we were brain storming as to what it could be we thought of that

Had no chance of getting it up to have a look due to rubbish weather, me working and my mate been off for Xmas from work!!

Thanks folks

I thought CV joints were usually noticeable when turning...?

I don't suppose it could be the supercharger engaging, and you're hearing it on the right side because that's the side you're on? I've started noticing the click more of late because it's hot, and I tend to drive with the RHS window open.

It a real pronounced click but more than one type of click if that makes sense.

I think I know the supercharger one you mention. The one I have is more metal against metal click.

I mean I can hear it in the car with the window up. As though what's making the noise is attached to the body in a round about way.

Could it be just the pads moving about and the backing plates hitting the carrier?

CV joints tend to only make noise when steering left or right and yes, they do click! Brake pads tend to clunk as you brake, especially if you last used your brakes when reversing and are using them going forwards for the first time. If you have aftermarket brake pads that don't fit very well, as many don't, they will make more noise, but still a clunk rather than a click. Have your checked the wheel for play? Wheel bearings too can sometime make a clicking noise if worn, when travelling slowly in bumper to bumper traffic. But you will feel play in the bearing at that stage so do check. One other thing to check...are all your wheel nuts tightened correctly? A loose wheel will click!! Hopefully, it's not that, or hopefully it is depending on your point of view. It's easy to fix but can be dangerous if you don't!

Thanks for the heads up folks. I'll get the bearings checked I think too. It's pretty much not pads from what it should and feels like.

I'll get them to check the steering u/j too as I'm nearly sure that when it does it you can feel it through the steering wheel...

Nuts are torqued right as I only did them the other day and pads seem to be ok as there genuine too.

I'll have a good session round it on Saturday I think with a torch and pry bar etc !
