My16 Service Advice. VRS diesel

Featured Replies

I've had my VRS for almost 18 months now on a 2 year PCH deal. Today it gave me the reminder it's 28 days for an oil service. (I've already changed the oil myself using skoda parts. I always do this with my new cars after a few months)

It's on variable servicing so the service screen says...

Inspection 170 days

Oil service 29 days.

I rand the dealers today and they told me it would be £270 for the first service because it's on variable ????

I explained that the inspection wasn't due just the oil service. She told me just to ignore it until the inspection is due then get it all done then??? I asked about warranty and she said it's fine.

Problem is when it goes back it needs to have been serviced if required, will I not get pulled up on the oil service? This will be before the inspection is due.

Is that the right price for a oil service? I'm sure I read it was a fixed £140 somewhere

As I've actually changed the oil can VCDS add reset or add extra days on? Or I'm thinking of buying the OBDeleven as it's cheaper than the service. Can this change the inspection days?

I'm by no means trying to get out of paying but the cars only done 7k and the oils been changed at 4K using genuine skoda parts. £270 is daylight robbery.

You've changed the oil yourself on a lease car!?  :D

Seriously on a PCH the top priority is to keep costs at an absolute minimum.

Book the car in for a £149 oil and filter service, that's all it needs...

This is how dealers make money, its set to variable therefore it needs a variable service @ £269. Except the first variable service on any Skoda is always only an oil and filter change, nothing more.

I too have a MkIII on a PCH. When it asks for it's first (and only) service sometime next year (year 2) it'll be getting booked in for a £149 minor service and no more.

Unfortunately in order to satisfy the terms of the lease you need to prove the car has been serviced in accordance with the manufacturers requirements.

You get a printed invoice to keep with the car when you hand it back and there is now a national electronic service record so Skoda UK (the lessor) can check it's been serviced.

Whilst I'm laughing at the OP for changing his own oil ahead of the service interval I'm not going to deliberately avoid changing the oil at all. My car will get all Skoda UK ask that is has; fresh oil and filter done at one of their franchised main dealers. Nothing more, nothing less.

Doesn't that then turn it too annual servicing rather than variable?

Force of habit I suppose. Always dropped the oil on new cars.

That's my aim to keep costs to a minimum as it'll be going soon as. The service dept were adamant that because it's over 12 months on variable, it would be £270.

Correct, the £149 is a minor or fixed interval service.

However the important thing here is that the first service, whether set to variable (long life) or fixed (minor) is the same; an oil and filter change. It's the same oil too (VW 507.00).

The extra parts changed on a variable service are only changed "if required", which on the Octavia is at least three years or 60,000 miles (pollen filter, fuel filter and air filter). Therefore anyone paying the £269 for a variable service (without ensuring the extra parts are being replaced) is being ripped off.

All Skoda UK will want to see when the car is returned is that it's had a main dealer service whilst you've had it. The dealer will moan that they can't perform a fixed service on a car set to variable and Skoda UK may even moan that you haven't had the car serviced accordingly but challenge them. Knowledge is power.

They simply cannot defend the extra £120 for a first service when all that is ever done is to drop the old oil, replenish it, change the oil filter and give the lights, wipers and tread depths a quick check.

Think you'll be in the same boat mate...read the website the minor £149 is only for 12 months or 10k which ever is sooner. So if like me you're on variable, your going to get stung for the £270.

Can VCDS or obd11 just change the days on the oil service to match the inspection?

I run two Skoda's, the Octavia on a PCH and a privately owned Superb.

I now service the Superb myself but when it was still in warranty all it ever got was the £139 (now £149) minor service despite being set to variable.

Sure, the pretty girl on the service desk at the dealer told me that she couldn't charge me £149 as the car was set to variable, however when I challenged that all they'd done was change the oil and filter (a £149 minor service) they agreed and backed down. We aren't talking about a couple of quid here, it's £120 difference.

If you don't challenge it then sure they'll charge you the higher amount, they are a business after all. Someone has to pay for the free coffee and wi-fi.

The car now reminds you for both, the oil service (fixed / annual / minor) and the inspection service (major / variable / long life).

To ask you to simply ignore the oil service sounds a little unprofessional, however she is at least saving you £149. Just make sure she doesn't charge you £269 for the inspection service in 170 days!

I'll get ready for a fight. Wouldn't mind, it's only just hot 7k miles

Be sure to post the reg number of the vRS when it leaves you. Sounds like a very well looked after car.

I'd always pay more for a used car, especially a used lease car knowing it had been serviced more regularly then the default 2 year / 20,000 mile variable service regime.

Fresh oil is the life blood of any engine and turbo.
