Auto lights on se sports

Featured Replies

Has anyone noticed that if you have the lights set to auto, when selecting reverse the front fog lights turn on? also if turning into a side road then one of the front fog lights turns on depending on direction of turn. I thought I had a fault with my lights but checked the manual and it confirmed this should happen. What is the idea of the front fog lights coming on when selecting reverse?

Also of a day sometimes just the Drl's are on and sometimes the front xeons will turn on to dipped also, the rear lights stay off so it is not fully turning the lights on to dipped as the sat nav stays in day mode. I do understand that if I go through a tunnel or it gets very dull then the lights will turn to dipped but as I say sometimes it just the front lights only. I wonder what the idea of just the front xeons coming on and what conditions are met for this to happen. The only way I can tell of knowing if I only have Drl's on or also the front xeons is if I happen to see my front lights reflection in a shop window etc unless I'm missing something.

Fog lights while reversing are so that when it's dark you can see better where the front of the car is if you're parking for example. The xenons coming on in the daytime is because if it's bright sunshine it helps people see you.

Thank you rustynuts, that makes sense especially the front xeons, although when I noticed them on it was overcast, was not dull but I am sure there was no sun out.

You can adjust the sensitivity in the Car menu.

Slightly off topic, but on the wifes Fabia MKIII SE-L you cannot alter the sensitivity of the Aoto Lights unless you have Auto Wipers. ( the wife's Fabia doesn't )  Do you know if its the same with the Octavia ?

You need to check this again, if it is in fact true then you have an issue.

DRL's on by themselves is fine i.e. no rear lights (although this can be changed if preferred). On the SE Sport the DRL's are LED and integrated inside the headlight, as a result they are dual-function (bright = DRL, dimmed = side / parking lights).

However if your dipped headlights are coming on (auto lights feature turns them on) and your rear lights stay off then you have an issue.

Front dipped headlights should never be on without the rear lights also being on.

The front fog light / cornering feature is a little unusual, it is becoming quite common now so you should see the feature in operation on other cars quite a bit. The cornering lights only work with dipped headlights, at speeds less than 40kmph and only when the steering wheel is turned or the indicator is turned on.

Having both front fog lights come on in reverse can be annoying as people are more likely to think you are deliberately driving around with your fogs on but the idea is they light up hidden bollards and low walls etc. when the front end swings out wide whilst reversing.

This is the MkII OCtavia so the DRL set-up is different than your car but the cornering light function is the same...

On the infotainment system, one of the options under lights is (auto control of headlights in rain) which is ticked, could this be why I get just the front xeons on dipped? although it was not raining it was misty...

Looks like groberts had the same issue recently but never got back if he resolved it. http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/419129-auto-lights/

No this is different, the car will turn on dipped headlights (with the switch in auto) if it detects that the wipers have been operating for a set period of time.

This is to ensure the lights turn on when visibility is reduced in the rain by spray when the ambient light isn't low enough for the light sensor on the windscreen to activate the lights.

As mentioned, if you are only getting front dipped headlights (with LED DRL's dimmed) and no rear lights then you have an issue.

In some markets it is compulsory to have dipped headlights on to operate as DRL's (where DRL's are not fitted). I wonder if something got messed up and the car is using the dipped beam for DRL's (as well as the actual DRL's) which is why the rear lights aren't on.

Either way its a dangerous situation to be in. I'd hate to think you might find yourself in a situation where you are driving at night with the switch in Auto and dipped headlights on but no rear lights on at all. Dangerous.
