New octavia VRS onwer Injector noise?

Featured Replies

Hi Guys

I’m new here so hello.

I’ve just put down a deposit on a 59 plate Yellow Octavia VRS TSI DSG with 30k on the clock.  The car looks in great condition inside and out, and everything appeared to work as it should, although I did forget to check that all the electric windows worked, I will check this when I pick it up.

The car drove well and pulled hard through all the gears, and I was surprised how smooth the DSG box was. This will take some time getting used to as it’s my first auto and I kept trying to use the clutch with my left foot . If I can’t get used to it I’ll just have to cut my left leg off.

Upon starting the car I noticed a ticking noise coming from the black box in front of plastic cylinder head cover. I was told this is the injectors and it’s normal for the TSI engine to do this. Coming home tonight I quick google search suggests the same thing. But I would rather make sure.

Can anyone confirm my queries?

Best Regards

Marc

Mine does make a cyclical rapid clicking / tap tap sound sound when idling that you can notice with bonnet up. It cycles in and out of doing it. I think it is the injectors.

Thanks for the reply

The car did cycle in and out speeding up and slowing down. I guess it was adjusting fueling.

Many thanks

If it's a loud tick tick tick, it's the N80 evap purge valve, and perfectly normal. It sounds horrific but it's just doing it's job of recirculating fuel vapour out of the tank and into the combustion process.

From 0:34, is how it should sound if we're talking about the same thing.

be aware the timing chain causes all sorts of issues on this engine.

That’s exactly how it sounds. I almost walked away after hearing it.

I've been reading quite a bit about this over the last few days. The car will be coming with a 6 month warranty, so I will consider getting the tensioners replaced at some point. Is it really as common as people are making out?

I spoke to my local mechanic today while I was getting my partners car booked in for a cam belt change and service. He said he hadn’t seen any problems concerning the chain tensioners on the TSI engines.

Whilst it's not an issue happening to every TSI out there, it's 'common' enough that I'm shocked to hear he hasn't at least heard of it.  If your car is pre 2012, I'd get the tensioner updated ASAP. About £400 IIRC, but better than worrying if/when the part will fail, potentially taking the engine and a £3k+ bill with it.
