New Battery Time?

Featured Replies

Not really ever had problems starting, but I was in the car cleaning the windows. I had the radio on for about 15 mins, and the demister for about 10. Car will not start or even turn over.

I have a feeling it's the original battery which would make it 75k miles old. Time for a new one or just charge it up again?

Had same issues so i just put new battery on bear in mind worst of the weather to come nothing worse than getting in the morning and  finding flat battery then you wished you had put one on :sun:

You had the rear heated screen on, without the engine running?

That is one of the largest electrical draws possible. A sure fire way to flatten the battery.

You should try jump start the car, or charging the battery and see how it lasts. Plan for a £70 new one though if it won't hold it's charge properly (Varta E44 096).

Woops, dunno why I wrote demister. I meant the front windscreen fan but couldn't remember the correct name. Even so, it was on for mere minutes; 10 at the most.

At 75,000 miles £70 is a small price to pay (wear and tear) and for peace of mind. Temperatures are set to drop over the coming days so replace it now would be my advice.

This is a very good battery, Bosch buy it from Varta, stick an S5 sticker on it and charge another £20....

Thanks all. Girlfriend has been on the gin and I'm not on her insurance so I'm stuck anyway. Might as well charge the batter for now and will get a new one ASAP.

Cheers!

So, long story but I need to bring the battery in the house to charge...

Am I right in saying it's this ~13mm bolt I need to loosen to remove the battery? The one in the centre of the image, out of focus...

13mm is probably the correct one

I've always used 1/2" socket on my car

Thanks, got it out. Just trying to find the right 12v Pb preset on my PowerLab 8 RC charger. I have three choices:

  • Lead 12v Optima AGM Spiral.PS8
  • Lead 12v SLA or Gel Cell.PS8
  • Lead 24V Series Car Batteries.PS8

Can anyone confirm that it's the first one as I suspect?

It's set for 2.45v, which for a 6 cell battery would equate to 14.7v, fully charged which is correct.

I think 2nd one as it is a seal lead acid battery (SLA), the first one is for cars with stop/start glass mat battery

That makes sense. The two chemistries are similar, and I guess I'd rather charge at 2.33v per and undercharge, than 2.45v per cell and overcharge.  It's charging along at 0.1C (6A for a 60Ah battery) and the "fuel" level of the batter was at 30% when I put it on.  It's going up to more along where it should be now.

What a nightmare cleaning some windows a has become.  I cannot get the ****** hose clip back on the MAF pipe, and in a fit of rage, I've cracked the filter box plastic.  Sitting waiting on the epoxy to try, and I still can't get the hose clip to open wide enough.  Serves me right for not having the right tool.

Had the same problem so i bought a set of pliers for the job from ebay £8 before someone got killed or lost there eyes crazy things
