Mode eco, normal, sports or custom?

Drive back from Wrexham to welshpool today (35 miles) using eco mode and managed to achieve 67mpg. Just over 500 miles on clock and now on 2nd fill.

Right ... Tried both eco and normal to and from work. Similar traffic conditions / travel time. Obviously there'll be some differences as no two journeys are the same, but so far ;

Eco - 35.6mpg

Normal - 34.5mpg

My commute is motorway for 10-11 miles, with a bit of town driving either side. Commute is about 18 miles in total.

Eco mode seems to make little / no difference on the motorway mpg as you'd expect. Coming off the motorway in both modes gives pretty much identical mpg.

Town driving does seem to be benefit from eco due to the lower gear shift points (DSG), throttle response and ability to coast.

Just my opinion from a VRS 230 DSG.

I usually use normal but I do like the eco mode for that reason, whenever I leave it in normal I think it holds onto the gears a bit longer than I would if it was manual.

I tried sport on the motorway tonight coming home from work. Just sounded annoying with the extra noticeable rumble from the sound actuator, when using slightly more throttle to maintain speed on an incline bit of the M6. Normal or eco all the way for motorway!

Yep, I have to be in the mood for sport mode. It'd do my head in all the time, it's just too eager.

Seems to overcompensate ... Even a Megane 275 doesn't have a hair trigger throttle like that in RS mode.

Still great fun though at the right time :-)

With the DSG there is something significant occurring as the gear change points will move and you get the coasting effect, but gearbox aside the engine setting is useless in my opinion (other opinions are valid!). It changes the throttle response, but doesn't actually do anything to the engine, so (in a manual at least) if you put it in eco and compensate with your right foot you will get exactly the same consumption.

 

Steering - Sport

Engine - Normal

A/C - Eco (except in the height of summer when it goes to normal)

mines in SPORT pretty much the whole time

individual is set exactly same as sport but without the sound generator - that gets used sometimes when i don't want it too loud. Don't use any other modes.

I genuinely use all three (eco, normal, sport) depending on what journey I'm making, and how I feel.

Sport is great fun, but sometimes find I need to knock the DSG out of S into D as it holds onto gears too long when you're not booting it. Also the actuator noise can be a bit much when you're pottering around town with the other half in tow.

Normal is great for 'normal' driving here and there, but admit the throttle response can be a bit numb.

Eco I find fantastic for my commute to work - laid back, relaxed, quiet, and saving a few mpg on my hellish journey into Birmingham.

Only had the car a few weeks, so will be trying out the different modes to / from work to see if eco does actually make any difference.

I'll go along with this approach.

We're only 2,000 miles in with our 1.4 petrol DSG, but I tend to set it in Eco, as this seems to be (surprise, surprise) the way to get best fuel consumption, then either slip into Sport or just flick the paddles as and when I want during any journey.

Working well for me so far.

vRS DSG - SPORT is just cr@p for the reasons everyone else had said - holds on to the gears. Its a pity because the throttle feels much sharper..... The coasting feature in ECO is a great feature but in ECO the throttle is dead! Shame the box can't be programmed independently of the engine.... I'm in INDIVIDUAL with a mix of SPORT & NORMAL .

Everything normal apart from Sport for steering, thought it might slightly reduce the level of over assistance, I suppose it  does a bit.

 

Have changed to everything Sport - It's not like it forces you to go fast.

 

Mode selection obviously less important in a manual car though.

 

Disappointing that 'Sport' does not firm up over assisted brakes for easier heel and toe changes.

 

If anyone wants to tell me why you shouldn't heel and toe please start a separate thread.

Can't you just leave the engine in sport (on individual) or everything in sport, then pull the DSG lever once towards you to switch back into D mode? Admittedly you'd need to do this on each ignition start...

Good question actually, I don't think I've tried that in the 22k miles I've had it! Something for tomorrow.... lol

I've used sport about twice in 3k, but I'm sure it let me do this the other day :)
