Jump starting with Stop Start

Featured Replies

My Youngest Son has just phone and asked if I could Jump start his car due to a flat battery. Can you jump start another car when yours has Stop/start. I told him I couldn't as I didn't know if you could.

Can You ?

A few months ago when I still had the fabia my neighbour asked me for a jump start as she had left her light's on, I told her I was not sure if I could as I did not want to damage my battery or cars electrical system, instead I gave her a push start, was heavy going as it was a Suzuki Jimny and the road was flat but it worked.....

Yes. Just put the earth cable on to the engine or an earth point on the body.. ;0)

I've done it for the brother on occasion. Just make sure that the black goes to the earthing point on the bulkhead near the battery.

When you jump start, all you're doing is adding another battery in parallel with the existing one.  As soon as you connect the two batteries, current will start to flow from the good battery to the flat one.  That is why the last connection you make should be the negative lead onto the chassis connection point.  This avoids any sparks being close to the battery which could be venting hydrogen!

However, in these days of cars full of electronics, I would check the handbooks for warnings first.

It does say in the manual.
