Error: Auto Stop Start

Featured Replies

Hi all

Started my car this morning and it made the most appalling noise, as though it wasn't starting properly. A message came up on the display - "Error: Auto Start Stop". I turned the engine and ignition off again and took the key out. Reinserted it - engine sounded fine this time, but the error message persisted. Throughout my journey to work (50 miles) the start-stop system wasn't kicking in. I did another manual restart at some traffic lights half way through my journey to see if it cleared, but it didn't.

There have been times where the stop/start hasn't kicked in until very late in a journey, but this has not been accompanied by the error message.

Any ideas what could be causing this? I'll see if it occurs again on the way home.

My car is a 1.4 TDI 105 (manual).

Thanks.

It could be any of the things that you are told about in the Owners Manual about why Stop / Start is not active.

Low battery, too high a power load requirement, the Ambient Temp too low, A/C on or Temp setting in car not reached etc etc

As to an 'error warning', best check with the Technician in a Dealership the reason behind that.

So I don't think it's any of the above. Not especially cold today, battery definitely isn't low, A/C not on etc.

Error Warning was the thing I'd not seen before and gave me concern. Might have to ring the dealer then! Problems after 6 months... let's hope it's not problems!

Octy, it may be a problem with the starter motor that caused and made the nasty noise. It may not have received the right amount of current to engage the pinion correctly. You may have an electrical fault causing the issue of the strange noise you heard and the error message. Best get it checked out as we can only speculate. Good luck and remember, it's covered under warranty.

The dealer will be able to check for Tech bulletins and if they search correctly they may find one relating to this very issue...

I've had this exact same problem with mine and over gone to skoda with ithe. But when I went there the message had gone I seems to happen on a regular basis. Chap in shop said sometimes it causes this due to it being cold or your sensor dirty.

I just looked at him blankly idiot.

But I use the car for work and home that's it from what I've been told. Give the car a right run out to charge the battery up enough for it to work. And I did that one day and seems to of done the trick

I had a similar problem with my Polo when using stop/start. The starter motor wasn`t engaging with the flywheel and it actually failed one time in a queue of traffic at some lights. Took about 4 attempts to restart. Other times it was fine, but eventually it became so regular I turned the S/S off.

Eventually the car went into my dealer where the clutch and flywheel were replaced under warranty at about 8000 miles.....All I was told was that the flywheel was defective. Cost over £2000 to replace.

Sounds like you have a similar problem albeit a more powerful version.

Maybe that would be what they found if they checked for tech bulletins :)
