1.4MPI with emissions light on and 2 codes

Workmate has a  2002? 1.4 MPI which has thrown an emissions light in recent days.  The car is rather infrequently used, as he can walk to work.

Two codes found today in Engine module with VCDS lite:

2 Faults Found:

17978 -  Engine Start Blocked by Immobilizer

        P1570 - 35-10 -   - - Intermittent

16687 -  Cylinder 3: Misfire Detected

        P0303 - 35-10 -   - - Intermittent

Cleared and now fault light is out, but we didn't have opportunity to take it for a drive to see if they came back.

Couldn't see any misfires accumulating in measuring blocks while it was running, not sure if VCDS can see them 'live' on this ECU/engine?

He hasn't noticed any immo probs.

I'm thinking remove coilpack and check plugs, as a first step?

Coilpack looks like it could be original, but they're £60 apparently, so want to rule out other stuff first. Wiring loom up to coilpack looks rather tight.

Best way forward?

Ta. :)

Best way forward with a car so infrequently used is to stick a tenner in it and take it for a damned good spanking to get it good and hot and clear it out, probably sooted up to buggery.

Engine start blocked by immobiliser is a very common spurious code and nothing to worry about.
