Pothole Reporting - novel response

Featured Replies

I reported a series of potholes on a major dual carriageway county road and, within three hours of the report being registered,  got a rather odd  E-Mail response back from the County Council.

"We have now inspected the defect at XXXXXX Road and no planned repair is necessary at this stage".

This seems a bit suspicious to get a such a definitive reply back so quickly.

The bit of road in question, between A40 at Denham and Slough,  was the 200 ft approach to a roundabout on a busy and fast major road i.e. the braking zone. Both carriageways were littered with a series of dinner plate to serving plate sized potholes i.e. 12-18" diameter . It was difficult to assess the depth, as there were so many holes in such a short distance, but I'm guessing most were in the range 1-3 in inches deep. The road at this point is on a slight downward slope. Unannounced, it didn't do the wagon's suspension much good.

On a heavily used  major road, approaching a junction, on a slope, I'd have thought it would need addressing ASAP.

Anybody else been getting this sort of response ?

Who replied on behalf of the Council and are you not asking why there is no action going to be taken as to the danger the condition of the road at this location obviously poses which even a untrained member of the public on a motorcycle can clearly see, or not as the case might be...

Perhaps a more honest response would have been "We are not bothering to inspect the defect at XXXXXX Road and no repairs are being carried out anywhere".

Have they not noticed some vehicles only have 2 wheels?.

Interesting response for sure....

I typicall report issues via "FixMyStreet"; which is good for reports and tracking.

A great tool and very easy to use...

My local council typically repair based on my reports on here - but are quiet slow to do so.

Every now and again i get a Council response that they cannot find the location; or that the link doesnt work.

Yet when i log in the link ALWAYS works and the EXACT GPS location is logged and visible.

They're not my local council, but  I have reported stuff to them before and, including a significant and dangerous slump of the a carriageway of a busy road and, in each instance, I've noticed that they have, in slower time acted - whether it was just in response to my report, is doubtful, as I guess quite a few people reported that earlier slump in a road carriageway.

Perhaps they're being mindful of finances as its approaching the end of their financial year.

I'm hardly a vexatious "Reporter" . . . only having reported 3 -4 duff pieces of road over the last 18 months, one outside a hospital entrance I was using at the time, one slumped carriageway which was too dangerous to ignore

Most of the roads I travel on are within the area of NW London bounded by the M25 and maintained by London Boroughs and they are, to date, in good condition - this  part of the country having escaped any really harsh weather so far this winter. The bit of road reported is in South Bucks.

I get the impression, that perhaps they are not too concerned as its on the perphery of the county i.e. a long way from County Hall.

Even though its way away from the centre of the county, that bit of road is effectively part of the Greater London traffic area,  with type of traffic and volumes to match and needs maintaining to that standard, not to that of a rural road. Most of that traffic wouldn't be on that road, if it wan't for the proximity of London and sateillite towns.

Good case for Mayor of London to assume responsibility for the infrastructure in the Hinterland to London ?

Anyway, I'll get back to them and see if "Fix My . . . " can be used
