Am I right I in thinking that the sidelight bulb in my headlights is just a dummy as I have drl's fitted?

Can the sidelights be activated with a bit of coding whilst still keeping the drl's on?

The DRL's act as the sidelights and AFAIK there isn't a way of turning the 'normal' bulbs on.

There's no wiring for them.

You're lucky enough to find out on here, most people find out the hard way, when their car fails its MOT due to the tester not realising the LED DRL's perform the role of sidelights.

 

The W5W bulbs are there to simply fill the hole as the same headlight is used on non-vRS models.
