Variable service cost (again)

Featured Replies

I know this subject has been discussed a number of times but thought I'd raise again as have just booked mine in for its first variable service (18.5k).

When in for some work last month I asked the price of the variable service. Was quoted £289. Then when booking it in yesterday I asked again. Was quoted £279. I queried that as the skoda website suggests £269 for a major service. They agreed to drop it to £269.

Today however I've been told for its second variable service much more will be replaced and that will likely be £365. Irrelevant for me as mine will have gone back to VWFS by then but appears my local dealer is basically charging £269-£289 for an oil change and then £365 for a major service purely because the car is on a variable schedule.

I can't be bothered to argue it as my lease stipulates it must be serviced by skoda and I'll only ever need one service but thought people on longer leases than me might like to know.

One thing I always do before buying a car is research the cost of servicing, that way no surprises in  a year or so's time and no need to complain.

If its more than I am prepared to pay or in the case of Subaru and Volvo clear stupid profiteering I just walk away. Subaru wanted a service every 6 months or 7500 and the cost worked out at about £1000 over 3 years back in the 90's - was paying about £400 over 3 years on a Ford at the time. Volvo were even worse, in 2008 they wanted £1400 up front for 3 services on a C30 diesel.

£270 for the first 2 services on the Superb looks like a bargain to me especially when its added to the 0% finance and gets for paid over 3 years.

Ironically I did and was told £100-£150 for its first service when I ordered it. I'm not worried about it for me as I don't pay for it, more that some unsuspecting people may get stung for £634 for two services if on variable servicing which seems very steep.

Other than lexus and 120,000 mile oil changed Subaru were one of the first to introduce 18,000 mile oil changes and then they soon found the error of their way, the oil and filters were Ok, the rest of the car was going too long between being serviced and Maintained by farmer and country type people.

Variable servicing is not really designed to save money, its simply to help avoid high mileage drivers having their cars in the workshop.

So its £634 for 2 variable services which would cover the first 60,000 miles (i.e when the next service is due).

For 5 fixed services again to cover up to the 60,000 mile service would cost 3 x minor and 2 x major (or whatever they call them) @ £150/minor and £230/major (prices quoted by our local dealer last November), total cost £910.

So there is a saving and it makes £630 look cheap to me for 60,000 miles of driving. Paid more than that for our Fords and Kia over a similar mileage

But since I only do 8000 miles a year its fixed servicing for me.

If the first Variable / Flexible service is at 19,000 miles and the next at 38,000 then another is at 57,000 miles.

That is 3 major services before 60,000 miles.

Fair comment but I based my figures on the normal max quoted i.e.20,000 mile interval. I have read about people in various VAG brands having the lights come on as low as 13,000 miles, that would need 4 major services before 60,000 miles.

But basing on your 19,000 miles and the quoted £630 for 2 services, pro-rata 3 services would cost £945 and would take you to 76,000 miles. Fixed servicing up to 76,000 miles would be 4 x minor and 3 x major and based on the prices quoted to me the total cost would be £1290.

Get the facts and make your choice but it should be based on your use/annual mileage and not on the prices.
