Ea888 tsi misfire.

Featured Replies

My 47k mile Scirocco 2.0tsi petrol has started to misfire terrible on tickover. (same engine as vrs)

Engine management light is flashing and sometimes EPC light. Above tickover it runs ok most of the time but sometimes misfires all the way through the revs.

I've had it to a vw independent specialist who thinks it is the timing  that is out (timing chain)but doesn't have the gear to do the job. He was a bit vague,as if he wasn't sure.He says take it to a main dealer!

I've spoke to someone else who is going to have a look Monday.

If it was the timing chain wouldn't it miss all the time?

I have also heard that the timing chain tensioner can fail prematurely. Could it be this?

Any help appreciated.

What was done before they reached this diagnosis?

What codes are showing, have all 4 spark plugs been removed and checked?

Failing plugs or plug, coil or other issues need checked before anyone can cash in on getting the better paying work...

First thing to check are coils/plugs/leads. Codes will indicate which cylinder to check.

Timing problems due to timing chain should also throw an error code.

I don't really know, when I went to collect the car he wasn't there. As far as I can tell he hasn't physically done anything to it just plugged in Vag com.

I was given the keys back by a young lad who knew nothing about it. He just said there was no cost.

I was told on the 'phone it wasn't the coils though.

I think you need to start over with another garage with some experience on these engines.

Any garage that is unable to change a timing chain sounds pretty limited capability IMO.  Maybe he was concerned his diagnosis was not strong. Either way, not talking you through it, not charging you and not wanting to do the work doesn't inspire confidence!

The are some measuring blocks in VCDS that give an indication of problems I believe, search online. I don't have any experience of successfully using them.

When I had a problem in a previous VAG car, it generated a DTC camshaft sensor issue - implausible signal.  That was without the timing stretch causing any driveability issues or missing. I would of expected with the severity of the problem you are describing, if timing chain is out that far,  to give some correlation errors but I have to admit, I'm not 100% sure.

As others have previously posted, diagnosis,  it is normally a process of moving from the easy to test and/or cheaper items to replace through to the more expensive so you or a new technician needs to work thorough that.

A replacement timing chain and tensioner is not a bad call either on these engines but it depends on your attitude to "risk".

Thanks everyone,I've got car booked in at another garage monday.

I'm very disappointed with the vw specialist. I've used him for 13 years for servicing and odd problems.

Will use someone else now.

Just spoke to the receptionist at the vw specialist to try to get more info.

Apparently he didn't scan the car, he says he thinks it is the timing caused by the chain and he doesn't have the gear!!

When I drove the car home last night it was ok above 1500rpm but the tickover was dreadful.

I will keep you informed

Ok. Just got a call off garage that has fixed my car.

It was the timing chain that had stretched-at only 47k!

Cost my £97 for chain kit and £250 for labour (mates rates)

Absolutely chuffed.

As for Volks-tek of Dronfield who didn't want to know, they have now lost a loyal customer after 13 years.

Thanks every one for your help.

Sounds like you got away lightly by getting it fixed before it broke.

And you certainly got it done at a very good price, well done.
