Do you think I can relax now?!

Featured Replies

So before Christmas (around the 15th I think) I was out doing a home visit for work. It was just outside of York in a village. On the way I got stuck behind a big prisoner transport van doing no more than 40mph... so where it was safe to do so I overtook.

I then approached and went round the next bend and there was a bloody speed camera van! Looked down, speedo around 70mph just eased off and braked a little and passed them at just under 60mph. I was in sight while doing 70mph so was sure I was going to get a ticket and was cursing for the rest of the day.

I literally never speed and always careful sticking to 30, 40, 50 and 60 limits etc (usually with some dork sat on my back bumper) so was very annoyed.

Well nothing has come so far so you reckon I can relax?!

I think you have to hear within two weeks.

I'd say you can relax.

Was the limit 60? Assuming your speedo was over-reading and you were doing around 70, you'll be fine. I've had enough close calls I tell you!

Ah yes. Forgot to say the limit was 60.

I kind of thought that but had no idea how accurate this speedo was.

It certainly has made me more weary of my speed. These sneaky camera vans in North Yorkshire.

At least we have no fixed cameras as they're annoying... everyone braking when they're already doing under the limit!

I had a similar situation whilst in wales just after Christmas, went round a blind bend going a bit over the limit think I was doing 45/50 in a 40... and there was the van! Its a crap feeling, no ticket for me. Guess only time will tell.

I picked up six points at the end of November.  Three points from Norfolk constabulary, and three points from Essex constabulary, both on the A12 and 11 minutes apart.  One at 82 and the other at 85 in a 70 on a dual carriageway.  I'd had both within five days, so I reckon you've probably escaped.

Brought it home to me that the second one was from camera 14 of 44, so I'd stood a very good chance of a ban.  Lucky escape, lesson learned.

Assuming your vans are pretty similar to ours, they can only catch you within a very close range of themselves. Yes theyll detect the speed a distance away but the capture system is the same as normal speed cameras - 2 photos with a laser marked set distance projected onto the road ( where fixed cameras have the lines painted) . Even a good hard braking in front of them can distort the readings enough that they cant definitively say you were speeding as the measures will be unrelatable.

And this /\ I was told by a work colleague whose uncle is an operator of the ones here...

One reason I cannot fathom why people 'correct' their speedo's with VCDS.  The 3 or 4mph over read might just save your bacon one day

Harsh, could you not argue it was the same offence?

Agree, I checked my BMW last weekend with my GPS, seems to show 80 when it's doing about 75, perfect. Nice buffer which I'd rather than a accurate speedo.

I did ask and the answer was a very clear 'no'.  It's as many times as you get caught, so it's quite possible to collect enough points for a ban in moments :dull:
