Laurin and Klement new owner!

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

Been a while since I was on here with my VRS estate.

Just picked up a mk1 Octavia 'Laurin and Klement' saloon, its the 110bhp 1.9 tdi, its not perfect but figured it would be a good commuting machine for the next few months. Loving all the optional extras, whats even more amazing is that they all work!

Few problems with it:

It jumps out of 5th gear, can be held in gear but the minute you let go it pops out. (reverse is fine)

The coolant temp gauge is a bit all over the place, spends most of its life at 50 then occasionally creeps to 70 but then in the blink of an eye its back at 50. Something not right...

I need to change a sidelight bulb on it, because it has the xenons it appears that access is difficult, do i have to remove the entire bulb housing? Didn't look straight forward.

Is there really only one cig lighter under the armrest? Seems like the worst place for it.

Pic attached of the car

Yeah Headlights out to change the bulb :( Four screws and the headlight unit comes out so not too bad

Only the one ciggy lighter, I've put another one in the trim below the headlight switch

and I've put a double USB charging socket in the centre console by the handbrake

The temp gauge possibly the coolant temp sensor, mine was a bit like that when I bought it but seems to of settled down now ??

5th gear, hopefully just needs slight adjustment on the cables

Thanks for the quick reply,

Had a quick look at the gear selectors it appears that one of the 3 pronged plastic 'grabbers' has lost two of its fingers.

Is it possible to replace just that end of things or does it have be a full selector rod unit?

Cheers

Thanks Nigel,

It appears to be a one piece cable according to the exploded diagram wouldn't you say?

Is this a dealer only part? Are they still in production?

Yes the cable is in one piece, you can't get the ends separately.  Try TPS before you go to your main stealership, parts are still avail, even if they don't have it on the shelf, they normally can get most things within 24/48 hrs

Well hello seems I'm not the only one daft enough to go for a MK1, Laurin Klement but saying that I had a very small budget and wanted another L&K   traded my old one, in  with 167000 miles for another one 46000 miles and so far ok.. while you are walking around your "new" car  I remember vaguely there should be a  boot light?  does yours?  and if so  where  exactly is it  .. thanks

Boot light is on the left panel, along the top I believe.

What engine code and gearbox will mine be? (assume its the 110 bhp, its a 5 speed)

Mines an estate version and it has the ASV engine & the only gearbox listed for that is the EGS

The only 110bhp 1.9 I know of is the AHF/ASV.

re coolant temp -

Replace the Coolant Temp Sensor (or is it sender?) and the thermostat along with the plastic thermostat mounting pipe. You won't be able to get the pipe out without damaging it so don't bother!

Ok will look into it, thanks. Is there a how to for that?

Also is there a how to on gear box removal and replacement? Search not coming up with much

Cheers

I think I just found a video on youtube to do it. Be wary you will lose coolant but maybe a good time to flush it out anyway?

Should I make the assumption that 'national' clutches off ebay (around £65) for the Octavia are not worth bothering with?

Isn't part 46 in the diagram what you are looking for?, or is it the connector at the lever end rather than the box end that you are after?.

I have done the box ends on my Vrs, and they were available from TPS last year.

Boxends now sorted thanks.

Car is jumping out of 5th gear so gonna get the box swapped tomorrow.

Also the car feels underpowered and the fuel economy doesn't seem great.

Any thoughts?

Have you changed the CTS yet? Did you buy a genuine one if so? Talking about low power and poor economy in a car with an obviously dodgy CTS is repeating symptoms.

Thanks for the reply, one on order.

Would a faulty CTS cause those symptoms?

Well, it definitely causes erratic temperature readings, and if those are getting to the EMS you'll be running with cold enrichment unnecessarily. It may not be the full story, but the CTS is proven faulty so change that before investigating "other stuff".

Is there any possibility that you could share the links to the components you used for this at all please?.

I have been meaning to do a usb socket for ages now and that looks just the ticket.

Thanks so much, another project for when the sun finally gets here.:D

Hey guys, little update.

Replaced the CTS and MAF as that's what showed up on vag com as being faulty and the car appears to be driving a lot better.

Will do a brim to brim test in good time, what average mpg should I expect around town and motorway from the 110 asv?

Cheers
