Adblue container/dispenser

Featured Replies

Can anyone recommend a reliable Adblue container for storing and dispensing this stuff?  I bought one from Halfords  (  http://www.halfords.com/motoring/engine-oils-fluids/fuel-oil-additives/adblue-starter-kit-4-litres ) just after acquiring the Yeti and found that it was very messy and leaked when in use and the so called spill-proof design was far from that.  I managed to eventually use it after herculean tightening of the bottle top, but trying to reach down into the Adblue filler area and get my fingers in to tighten the other end of the dispensing tube was a right chew.  I persevered and got the Adblue topped up (it took the best part of 4 litres but the dash indicator suggested only needed 1.75....ummmm!).  Consequently, Ive ordered a Kemetyl adblue container after watching the nice lady in the video showing me how easy it was to use ....

It's just arrived in the post and guess what?  The so-called 'spill-proof' bottle was even leaking while in the delivery box - Arrrgh!!

Anyone got this sussed yet, or have I simply been unlucky twice?

The VAG/Skoda bottle ? .... I'm sure your advised not to decant and store due to the possibility of cross contamination.

I have used the VAG 10lts container and the extension filler hose with "fill stop" valve, and it works very well, albeit heavy when lifting the container when full.

I bought the VW/Skoda bottle from the dealer in Stourbridge for just over £6.

After 1m 45s this video shows you how to refill the bottle

Not really relevant but

I took my Yeti into the dealer from whom I bought it.

They had told me their least busy time and while I waited, the workshop topped it up from their bulk tank and only charged me 'cost'.

To the brim for £2.60 + vat and no labour.

With service available like that (Birchwood Skoda Eastbourne) I won't be bothering with any potential issues by DIY.

Might your dealership do the same?

Perhaps, but since they are 80+ miles away......................:)

Thanks for all of the replies - really helpful.

Does Adblue have a 'shelf-life'? I also bought a 10L container to top-up the refill bottle, but now wonder if the 'shelf-life' is appreciatively affected if opened and some of the contents decanted.  Will the remaining Adblue be usable after, say two months or so? I've noticed that the Adblue containers appear to be translucent, so presumably it doesn't degrade in light (not that I've any plans to leave it laying around on the window sill!).

I think it's accepted it has a 2 year shelf life if stored properly.
The should be storage instructions on the container.

Thanks Urrell - some good info there.  I've just emailed unipart-autoparts who sent me the leaking Adblue 1.5L Kemetyl bottle, to request a replacement and to complain about the damaged item.  If its leaking then clearly air (and potentially other contaminates) has been reaching it for an unknown period.

The information you supplied suggests it should be ideally stored between 0 degrees and 30 degrees - temperatures easily exceeded in Yeti's boot if left out over night on the drive in winter, or if parked up on a hot day in the sunlight in summer. I guess its a matter of duration at these temperatures though, and it would be easy to insulate the container - providing it doesn't leak!!

As it only needs topping up a couple of times a year why bother with carrying in the car, it could sit in the garage or shed between being used.

Shell sell the stuff in a 10l bottle with a good flexible nozzle, I've used 2 lots and not had any leaks or mess

Still trying to work out the Adblue consumption.  I've owned the car less than a month and have put 2000 miles on it (now just over 4000 on the clock) and I've had to fill up already.  I typically drive 15,000 to 18,000 or so miles a year so it could require refilling every quarter.  As I make regular trips north to the wilder parts of Scotland to run/recce various remote Munro routes, etc. I'd rather be well prepared than sorry!

Not too much running on some of the harder Monro's

Has Scotland all of a sudden become a 3rd world nation with no Filling Station or Motor Factors North of Inverness or of Fortwilliam?

Simply Clever, If you have enough diesel in the vehicle to head to the wilds & to get back then be sure you have the ad-blue in as well.

Ever been to Sutherland mate?  A couple of weeks driving around and wild camping/climbing/running there and I always make sure I carry a jerry can of spare fuel too.  You'd be Simply Stupid not to.  As you're asking, Scotland in MHO is definitely 1st world-class, especially compared to the now rapidly degenerating state of the Sassenach nation to it's south!

Ooopnorth,

funnily i have very often travelled around the very north of the mainland camping, cycling, camper vanning, Bothying etc.

Funnily lived there for a while as well.

I prefer a bit further south like the Torridon area.

Doing a wee trip shortly in a TDI /SCR.

Gorgeous pics Offski.  Yes Torridon is really spectacular, especially in winter! And there's that charming little campsite at Shieldaig, with the red honest box, near the immaculate public loos with hot water and sometimes even decorated by a vase of flowers - definitely 1st World :) . Enjoy your future trip.

Mention of Shieldaig brought back memories of our own 2012 Great North Run in the X-Trail while we were waiting the then-inevitable six months for the Yeti.  CFB recommended Nanny's Tearoom, which we duly visited.  Another Yeti has been there more recently, I seem to remember, so if you're passing that way....

I reported here later :

'CFB's 'Nanny's Tearoom' was easy to find, even if it wasn't quite what we'd expected. The young lady in charge ('Nanny' wasn't there) seemed quite impressed that we had travelled nearly 600 miles to follow up a recommendation for their tea and home-made cakes. Which actually were well worth the trip. We tried several pieces of cake, to ensure that they were all equally good. The ginger cake had lumps of ginger in it - heaven. CFB was right and it's a place not to be missed but if you're thinking of visiting, make it soon - seems that Health and Safety has told them to install 'facilities' for customers and that would mean a total rebuild.'

In passing, Google Maps' link to Nanny's shows that the rebuild has happened.  This was the original  -

Back on topic.

When I filled mine for the first time, like others I used the VW 1 litre bottle and refilled it from the VW 10 litre container. This worked very well but I wondered how many times the top could be unscrewed off the 1 litre bottle (it has serrations to stop this) before there could be a problem when unscrewing it from the tank and it leaking.

So following advice I bought the VW filler pipe with valve.

The fill up with Adblue warning has just started coming on for the second time at 13k. miles so I can try the filler pipe now.

Indeed.   My apologies - I should have signed off the OT post.
