Google map location data

Featured Replies

Morning all,

Is there a way to take the data google maps has stored as my location history and then export it to something easier to digest? Essentially I need to prove I wasn't somewhere that another party is claiming I was. Its a bit complicated but I need to do this with around a years worth of data. Google maps loads and it shows me a breakdown in the left hand bar of times, miles driven, addresses etc and then on the right a map plotting my locations. Essentially I need all this information but in some kind of hard copy that I can give them...I thought about screenshotting but the information isn't all there as some days require scrolling down the page to show the end locations etc.

Any help much appreciated..

I suspect that sort of functionality isn't free from Google. They have paid for mapping options with quite extensive.

If the data is already on a device there might be some sort of 3rd party tool that will let you extract it.

Don't know if this helps -

You do get tools that will screen shot a page that requires scrolling. I've used them in the past.

This page mentions DuckLink. I've not used that one so can't comment.

If you log in to your google account on a PC, you can view your location history that way. On the map screen, there is a gear wheel (options), and there is a link there to download data

So, log in via Google

Go to Personal info & Privacy

Choose "Manage your google activity"

Then "Activity Controls"

Then "Location History" - Manage Activity

Bottom right - cog wheel for Options (by the radio button for map/satellite)

Then "Download History" - it's available as either JSON or KML format

Yeah I've done that bit but I now need to select dates and then make that information (map, times etc) available elsewhere.

Essentially it's being claimed I live somewhere I don't and I thought using my GPS information would show that I am not there overnight at any point. But I need to make that information available ideally in print.

Export it into a KML file from your Google dashboard. Been a while since I did it so can't be 100% if you need to import it into Google earth 1st before you can export it.

Once you have the data in a KML text file, you have the date and time of the gps location ping and the co-ordinates themselves. Would this be sufficient to present as evidence that you require?

<when>2017-02-03T14:06:29Z</when>
<gx:coord>-2.99099 51.9924993 0</gx:coord>

It's pretty easy to parse as it's just a very simplistic XML file. If you'd like a little script to reformat it into something a little nicer, just shout.

I'm only raising this as it may prevent you wasting a lot of time unnecessarily.

Providing the above above information would not necessarily prove you were not there, just that either you phone was off, or your phone was at an other location or with someone else.

If this is being pursued officially, DWP et al, then they would have to provide the proof; the burden of proof lies with them.  If they are acting on a tip off, then this would normally instigate an investigation being conducted by them; sending out an investigation team to take video or photographs of you at the premises or location you were not supposed to be at, and so on.

Basically, it is up to them to prove you were there.

If you still want to provide them with your Google locations, download all the info and give it to them as it is, it is then up to them to work through the files to get the relevant dates or info.

Basically...I took my car finance out using my ex-wifes address. We split up a while ago and I'm living with my mum. Didn't change my address as wasn't sure where I was going to be permanatly and I do own the house.

Basically the benefits people had it flag up on their system and have started investigating my ex. My own fault but I don't live there and never will again. I've handed over a year and a half a worth of gps stuff so hopefully it might show them I'm not living there.

Screenshotted every day!

Just watch out it doesn't get flagged on your credit file. Finance get funny about things like this, as they lose a lot of money to fraud with people having finance at an address they don't live at then disappearing.

Is your license and V5 upto date with your correct address? If not get sorted before the finance company snitch on you
