Mk1 1.9 tdi aircon

Featured Replies

This Mk1 is proving to be fun from the word go ......

Next on the list ...I took it to have the aircon gassed today and serviced etc ...

Had 325grm in it , it was taken out and refilled to full , no leaks etc .....but compressor doing nowt ?.......

Should I bite the bullet and get new if so what needs to be changed ? .....or has anyone got one?

Look down into the front left of the engine bay where the aux belt runs. You will see the air con compressor at the bottom here, check if it has the clutch on the end of it as they are known to fall off regularly. With the AC turned off in the car the clutch won't spin, with it on the clutch will spin. Also the engine tone on the diesel changes when the clutch engages.

The garage checked the pressure , fine , no leaks , filled full again , did all the tests and compressor wasnt doing anything at all even after a re charge etc , no fault codes stored showing pressure sensor to the aircon so Im presuming the unit is goosed , engine tone doesnt change and hasnt since we got it .......ebay is looking at 120- 160 for a half decent one with two year warranty , but what are these aircon dryers ? are these worth getting /changing?

That sounds like the magnetic clutch on the compressor isn't energising when you select the AC on, there is a 2 pin plug coming from #7 in the pic

Pin 1 Green/Black is the 12v switched out from the fan control unit

pin 2 Brown/Black is the Ground

There is also another 4 pin connector further back by starter motor pin 3 Green/Black as in the 2pin & pin 4 Brown/Black as in the 2pin

The wire that energises the magnetic clutch rubbed through and broke close to the back of the compressor. Once the garage found the cable and spliced it back together all was well.
