Exhaust Gas Recirc. Sensor (A) Circ High Input Code 4196

The secondary air fan keeps filling with water , anyone else had this problem?

I have replaced the fan checked the pipes, perhaps a combo valve fault?

dump valve replaced but it still comes up with the code about every two weeks, any advice glady received. Intake Camshaft Contr.Circ.,Bank2 Short to B+ also continues?

Hmmm, sounds like a strange one. Sorry I can't help, but welcome to Briskoda :wave:

Seems that you are using a Bosch KTS tester or similar system that doesn't actually come up with standard VAG codes.

According to your 1st post, you did get 4196, which is not a VAG code, but based on the assumption that you are using a Bosch KTS, the correct VAG code is 16790 which would be shown as EGR Temp Sensor (G98): Signal too High by VAG-COM. So I checked a couple of 150 HP engines in question, but neither one of them has a G98, so either your ECU is defective or you posted a wrong fault code or your chiptuner did mess something up.

Since you did not post a fault code of the 2nd one (Intake Camshaft Contr.Circ.,Bank2 Short to B+) it's hard to help you on that, since the text varies between the tool manufacturers. So besides posting complete fault codes, it would be helpful to have the engine code of the car in question.

So 1st thing to do now is telling us which diagnostic tool you are using since the posted output doesn't seem to be correct.

Sounds like a wiring issue to me on the VVT solenoid for the second fault.

Short circuit to B+ usually indicates something is disconnected.

Not so sure on the EGR fault.

Hi Guys thanks for your response so far. Im using a Gendan code reader which gives 4 figure codes. I agree with the diagnosis of the cam sensor I will look for a wiring fault with that.

On the other matter I have 4196 (16790)& 4529 (17705) (these persist)

Ive fitted a new dump valve & cleaned the MAF, as mentioned before I also replaced the sec air fan at a cost of £300!

The car suffers an occasional misfire from cold, just a stutter at low revs really, Ive checked all the coil packs and they are 2003 the car is 2001 so im guessing the are ok.

You should definitly try to read codes with a different tool, we've had more then one case yet where these hand held readers were wrong. Especially since I still can't find a G92 in a suitable 150 HP engine and you still didn't tell an engine code.

I'd agree with Seb on the EGR fault, ive never seen an EGR temp sensor on a petrol car.

Get a real scan tool... An 1.8T (AUM) has no EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirc).

I sent your responses to gendan, they have been most helpful and are posting a cable for my laptop so i can use vagcom to check further.

The guys at Gendan spotted my error. The four figure code readers are Hex code (thats hexadecimal base 16) so its not 4196 but 419b which translates to secondary air fan flow fail. I.e its still filling with water or condensate. Combo valve eprhaps? any ideas chaps?

There is a fuse and relay for secondary air injection on the bulkhead just behind the airbox in a little relay carrier.

The relay can be activated via Final Control diagnosis (03) in the engine control unit with VAG COM.
