OH DEAR can see flywheel!

Featured Replies

2010 Yeti 1.2 TSI S manual petrol.

New engine fitted June 2016 after original engine destroyed by timing chain fault. (SKODA admitted fault and paid completely for engine and installation).

I have just been able to look underneath and noticed that you can see the flywheel at the bottom of where the engine and the gearbox meet!  It looks as if there should be a vertical plate plate across the bottom to enclose the bottom of the box/engine mating housings.  I am standing under the car with my back to the offside and my head just beyond the mid car point towards the offside and looking up towards the nearside where engine/gearbox meet and can see about 2 to 3 inches of the bottom back face of the flywheel.  Surely there should be a plate across to prevent any foreign bodies/wetness getting in??Can anyone shed light on this?

Yes. Ask the dealer who done the work.

Although there was normally a plate there, it maybe not now a dsys. There is no harm in asking.

Ps. Why are you under the car looking ?  You'll only get upset.........

I have spoken to the main dealer and their senior technical man said there is no plate fitted on that position, it is left open on purpose as the spinning flywheel prevents water/dirt from entering the bell housing.    ???
Problem solved.  Plate does exist!!!!!!! A good trusted local garage I have known for years unfortunately left it off while looking at something else and has put it back on.....2 bolts.  Have known mechanic many years since he was an apprentice.....much embarrassed!!  very apologetic (genuine human mistake by a good knowledgable man).  Have known garage owners family a long time - 4 generations ...currently 2 generations in charge........they have put up with me a lot in the past as I used to spend much time down there using facilities and having work done on my older vintage and classic cars.  Grandfather and father now passed away so they no longer service combined harvesters/farm machinery/valve radios/TVs etc!! just cars and commercials and crash recovery.

MY FAITH IN SKODA MAIN DEALER NOW VERY MUCH DENTED after their statement above and the poor state I found the brake system in on my 39,000 regularly dealer serviced car (needed 4 new disks and one new calliper due seized piston).  It will in future be going to my nearest local garage whom I also know and who will do a proper service....eg grease on brake pad/calliper metal-to-metal sliding parts (like I do on my Scimitars).  Pad worn light was not even on.
I still believe servicing is done to prevent problems!?!
