As mikeholroyd has pointed out several times by now, there's a label inside the boot which has all the option codes for your car printed on it. One of those will indicate what wheels and tyres your car was supplied from the factory with. It's a 10 minute job to jot them down and run them through a decoder and there will be no more confusion or guessing about the matter.

As you can probably see by now there were several different size combinations offered on the Octavia and it's pointless trying to guess what your car should have when you can go find out for certain. If you don't want to go out in the rain, there should be a copy of that label inside the front cover of the service book (if your car came with one).

What the car came fitted with with not necessarily the specification it needs to meet. Skoda staff saying that is just to excuse their lazyness in finding out what the actual rating requirements are. The type approval documentation will state what the actual ratings are but VAG do not readily publish this information (unlike both the cars we have that have minimum load and speed ratings specified alongside the tyre pressures, even with a separate acceptable speed rating for winter tyres in the case of my Subaru).

The 1.9 is very unlikely to have a rating requirement higher than H in the type approval documentation.

But I think the OP needs to go outside and come back with the current tyre sizes if we are to be able to provide advise on specific tyres.

I can't find the code in the boot and I didn't get a service book with the car

current tyre sizes they are 205/60r15 - fronts are 91h rears are 91v

What gets me about speed ratings is that cars come with tyres that have speed ratings the car will never be able to reach ... My 2Litre TDI is booted with 225/45/17 W as standard although Y is very often a cheaper option ...

There's no way on earth my car will reach the speeds these tyres are rated for, something like 170-180mph, unless it's free falling off a cliff... Even H rated tyres at 130mph are beyond the top speed of my car. The crunch is the tyre manufactures only make tyres of certain sizes and these are fitted at the factory so you're insurance company has you over a barrel to insist you fit them...

I'm no expert, and I'll admit that, but surely the only difference between identical tyres with differing speed ratings is the tyres ability to drive at the sustained max speed without blowing up ... Surely if your car is incapable of exceeding a certain speed then any tyre higher than that can safely be fitted.

Go for V rated - better tyres, not significantly more expensive than H, and guaranteed to meet what your car came out of the factory with.

V rated all the way over H - anyday, everyday

So if I can't find the label in the boot and haven't got a service book, I'll be safe and legal if I have a crash with V rated as they are highly rated?

Absolutely correct -

Scenario 1 - if your car should have H rated - if you have V rated tyres put on, then they will exceed what the car should have, so all is well. In this case, H rated would meet the standard, so would be OK too

Scenario 2 (far more likely) - if your car should have V rated - if you have V rated tyres put on, they meet what the car should have, so all is well. In this case, H rated would NOT meet the standard so your insurance could be invalidated if you fit H rated.

Either way, the price differential for H and V rated is negligible, so just go out and buy V rated and know that this will be fine. Save a few pennies on H rated and you might not be meeting the requirement for the car - V rated you will.

Remember what was discussed earlier in this thread that you can't rely totally on the tyre suppliers websites - i have proved with one of my cars that they can be totally and utterly wrong. The only way of knowing what it really should be is from the aforementioned option sticker

But this wont matter if I get V rated?? :D

Obviously not

This topic is now simply going round in circles (no pun intended) - if you intended to get V rated why go to all this discussion?

We have offered advice, and that is to go for V rated tyres, I don't feel we can do much more to be honest....

I didn't intend to get V, I just wanted to know as I had 2 different lots of tyres, thank you for helping me
