Severe vibration through front of car and up through steering wheel at speed of 70 miles an hour plus

Thanks mate been down that road. Breaking is very smooth. Beginning to wonder if the diff bearings are worn but again clutching at straws. Going to put my original alloys back on tomorrow to see if it makes a difference.

Have you had any suspension work done recentley(other than trying to fix this!)?- I had issues with my old Superb I (not my current Superb II) when a pattern part bottom arm/ball joint was fitted. Couldn't see any thing wrong but had an original equipment version fitted instead and all was well - think it must have been a slightly different size or something...

trying a different set of wheels is probably a good call. I wouldn't think it would be any sort of bearing issue as you would hear it before any other symptoms

I have heard about CV joint issues as mentioned earlier in the thread causing vibration but never experienced it so not sure how common it is and to replace them just for the sake of ruling them out seems a bit much.

Also wondering about the drive shafts - I've had this in the past with a 1990 Passat when an "inner" CV joint started to fail as grease had dried up (nearest exhaust!) but the symptoms changed with power on/off. Vibrated/banged like mad going up hill, OK downhill. Drove thorugh France where I ground down to 25mph uphill and had to do 115mph down hill to make it up the next! (well pre-speed cameras!)

The other possible issue might be that someone has jacked the car up on a drive shaft! (The Superb is heavy!)

It's such a shame because I really do like this car but my bank balance is screaming at me now to get rid. I've spent so much money on her but I think I'm going to have to cut my loses and start looking for another car. Back to Ford I think.

Re Jacked up drive shaft - when you swap the alloys over, spin the brake disk and look down the drive shaft and rotate using the disk  - is it straight!

Well I replaced the offside driveshaft with a genuine one which made a slight difference. But...vibration still there. When the vibration starts you feel it in the middle of the front of the car floor where you rest your left foot and also in the steering wheel. It feels as if the wheels are out of balance but there not. Just had them checked again. However another development is I can feel a knocking or something like a dull thudding at low ish speed from drivers left footwell. Car now at 170000 miles and I'm thinking engine and gearbox mounts. With the thudding feels like a high frequency vibration upto steering gets worse at 75mph upwards.

Last chance for the car now having engine mounts replaced on Friday if this doesn't work she's gone had enough of her. This car has financially broke me.

Any luck after mounts job?

  • 3 weeks later...

I have been following this thread, I also have a 170 dsg superb 193,000 miles also a taxi, My vibration is most noticeable when pulling hard toward motorway speed.

Engine speed  2- 2,500 rpm is the roughest . Had DMF last week, no change, but needle bearing was on verge of collapsing.

Had injectors checked and they within tolerances, (apparently bad injector can cause vibration).

I get a knock occasionally which can't be tracked to usual suspects, had links already. So I asked mechanic to check engine mounts etc, I have wear in lower engine bush (big one in crossmember). Today I went in for an insert (poly bush) 10 mins to fit and afterwards.. rough as ****, really bad vibration  at  low idle and  gentle acceleration, had to remove it .

But upon removing the vibration has gone!

When will it return? Have to wait and see. Like Philtaxi I am going to replace my Skoda, but with another, Maybe a L&K, mine has been great apart from inner tyre wear.

Finally cured it. Nothing short of a miracle. Well I replaced rear engine mount the "dog bone"as the call it but vibration was still there and at this point I was gutted. One of the main problems I had was the mechanics at furrows could not feel the vibration. They would not take the vehicle above 75mph because of their licence which is understandable.  Problem was the vibration never really showed itself until after that speed. So I took their chief mech out with me and I drove instantly he saw what I meant and agreed straight away how bad it was. Now he new what he was looking for.

Now this is where I have egg on my face.... When I bought the car I thought the original 18" alloys were too big and bought some hybrid 16" steel wheels bigger side wall more comfortable ride and at first they were. However a day later mech pulls up outside my house and asked me to go for a drive with him. As I got in the car I noticed different wheels on the car. He drove the car and no vibration at any speed I was amazed. The steel wheels I had on were made from cheaper steel than original Skoda steel wheels and all of them had gone out of shape.  We put my original alloys on one had a flat spot that they couldn't balance out so I bought an alloy wheel and it's cured the car now drives lovely.  I feel a bit of **** now after all the money I have spent chasing this vibration but I suppose I would have spent it on her at some point. So there we are finally got to the bottom of it. My thanks to Lee and Jaffa at furrows Skoda Oswestry for finally finding it.

So @Danny 57 was right to start from wheels

Glad you sorted it.

Yes. Problem is half the time these things are not as straight forward as they appear. Wish they were would have saved me an awful lot of money. But we are where we are. Thanks for all the help that was forthcoming.

Glad you have sorted it. You fell into the trap that we all fall into sometimes. Go back to basics and look at the simple things first without being distracted. This is not meant to be a smart arse remark as I have been there before myself. :blush
