Water pump advice

Featured Replies

I've bought a Gates timing belt set and a Fahren water pump. Having received it, the only information on the box is 'Fahren'. I've looked on the net and find virtually nothing about them beyond the importer(?), FPS Distribution, comments :  'Fahren water pumps are among many product groups from the brand which are aimed to provide cost effective solutions without compromising on quality' and that they have a one year or 12,000 mile guarantee.

Does anyone have any information on/ experience of these pumps?

Can't say I've heard of the make, but I would suggest calling a VaG trade parts place and asking them their opinion of Fahren water pumps.

I know that VW pay to take back water pumps (with a surcharge), to then destroy them. When I asked why as I thought surely they could be reconditioned, I was told it was to prevent quality standards slipping.

Oh I did not know that was what VAG's plan was for these exchange pumps, certainly the exchange one that I bought years ago looked brand new! Maybe they take them back to improve their environmental (green) credentials - then hand them over for recycling the metals, better than nothing I suppose though not quite what they implied they did with them by using the "exchange" descriptor, almost as environmentally friendly as wind turbines?

Water pumps were always remanufactured because the only part that used to fail was the graphite gland allowing them to leak, it was a relatively trivial process to clean the pump and replace the gland and bush. Nowadays the plastic impeller has to be destroyed to dismantle the pump so that gets replaced as well.
