My thoughts on a long drive to Austria

Featured Replies

Well, having driven a 860mile each way skiing trip this half-term, I thought I'd give some feedback on my Superb...

Comfortable long distance cruiser, perhaps not as comfy as my last Volvo, but didn't get out with a bad back.

Only got 55mpg average but car was fully loaded with 3 adults, 3 sets of skis and appropriate luggage. I imagine the winter tyres didn't help.

Built in Satnav worked really well, TMC traffic reports were fairly accurate but it was a bit too keen to re-calculate the route. It did try to divert me of a autobahn for traffic queues 100miles ahead, only to find no traffic when we got there. Thankfully, as I had mobile data on my phone so could check the traffic on Google maps.

ACC worked really well in the Munich traffic, took the stress out of stop-start traffic.

Had to manually adjust time and headlight setting (have Xenons) even though software setting set to use GPS - didn't take time to faff about with it as it was 12:30am:sleepy:

Weather conditions were bad when we got off the tunnel and in northern Germany, heavy snow couldn't see the road, bearing in mind this was early hours of the morning there was no traffic to keep the roads clear.....the Goodyear UltraGrip winter were the best investiment I've made!!!!!!!!!!

At one point on the journey home, the satnav decided to divert me up a mountain pass, lots of snow & slush - not a peep from the traction control.

Overall, happy with the cars performance but could do with a setting to have Mrs Pezky get a small electric shock when she tailgates and the dashboard distance warning is lit :D

Done it a few times in my Mondeo and with winter tyres being essential the journey is not too bad apart from the Munich ring, i am sure that's why ACC and DSG were invented, don't do it on a Saturday especially half term, usually the same week as Karnival:swear:.

Is the time difference due to Daylight Savings Time?

Not sure about daylight savings etc. I'd read another post that their headlights had adjusted to RH traffic automatically. Sadly we have to go in Feb half term as the Mrs is a teacher

Sounds like a good trip !

GPS time can give you Universal Time Co-ordinated (UTC) commonly known as GMT but what the Sat Nav units do not do is vary for entering differing timezones so you may have to manually change for DST or European Central Time.  Worth a look, see P142

  1. Time and date settings

Press the  button, then tap the function surface Time and date.

+1. I love driving on the continent.

Like many others, I do regular continental road trips. My first in a Superb III (MY16) was in 2015 with a certain trepidation about how the various electronics would handle the switch from driving on the left to driving on the right. Even Skoda UK couldn't answer my questions about it. Any concerns I had were quickly dispelled.

The automatic changes are...

Xenon headlights switch to "driving on the right" - it flattens the beam pattern. I always use Le Shuttle and it may take a couple of minutes after leaving the train but it then switches automatically. There is no setting that needs to be enabled. It's worked every time for me both on daytime and nighttime crossings.

ACC automatically adapts to driving on the right. It reverses the UK setting. Passing on the left is unhindered whilst passing on the right (under-taking) requires a throttle pedal override at speeds above 50 mph. I often encounter this within a couple of miles of leaving the terminal when the motorway splits and I need to take the right spur for Belgium.

The manual changes which I perform while waiting to get on Le Shuttle (Car -> Settings) are...

Set the clock to GMT+1. Other than Portugal, which is in the same time zone as the UK, mainland Western and Central Europe are always one hour ahead and as they change the clocks twice a year at the same time as the UK they will always remain one hour ahead.

Set distance units and speed units to Kilometres and KPH. I leave consumption on mpg as my brain can comprehend it easier than l/100km.

Just to clarify for any first-timers regarding the auto-switching lights...

The bi-xenon dipped beam will adjust very quickly but the Car->Settings->Lights will continue to show "Driving on the Left" selected. If you try to access it on the move you get a message that this option is currently not available. The first time you stop, simply turn the ignition off and open the door so infotainment goes off. Turn ignition back on and a message will briefly appear on the maxi-dot that lights are set for driving on the right and the Lights menu will now correctly show "Driving on the Right" selected.

Is this quoted from the MY17 manual? I notice the absence of the Time Zone option that is shown on my MY16 Columbus...

So now I'm intrigued ... does the MY17 version auto-detect the time zone?

@Q102  You say you had to manually change the clock. Is yours MY16 or MY17? (If you're not sure: the MY16 was pre-June 2016 and has a framed rear view mirror whilst the MY17 has a frameless rear view mirror)

PS: To get Automatic summertime to actually work on the MY16 required the coding to be switched from "Automatic" to "Europe" using VCDS!
