Apple Play / Android Auto with HU.

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

Quick question, my grandfather has recently purchased an Octavia, and with the standard HU it's possible to link (mirror link) smart phones but when I click on to it then it says contact Skoda for a code (or words to that affect), do we need to go back to Skoda for this, or is there a work around like on VCDS?

Skoda dealers sell the code and have to perform the upgrade/coding.

if you have a search around on here its around £150.

Skoda call it Smartlink.

Thank you Glosrich

If you don't have satnav, and he has a recentish iPhone (5 onwards, with the small Lightning connector) or a recentish Android phone (anything running 5.0 onwards) then it's totally worth it IMO. It's standard fit on the Fabia SE and up, and I love it. Google Maps in particular!

It does have sat nav not sure what's headunit it is, but it's a 66 plate, just wondering how to pair the mirror link

Either an Amundsen or a Columbus. Although I think the latter had SmartLink as standard?

Not sure it's worth the £150 if he's already got satnav. The voice control using Google/Siri is nice though.

Hi, if the unit is asking for a key etc. then its a trip to the dealer, I had mine done last year takes less than an hour and cost me £135. The voice control works pretty well and siri can be activated just using voice as it is plugged in to power. I think it is worth it although the apps themselves are limited.

Ahh, nathy87! Nath, if he's got nav I would say it depends entirely on the phone he has as to whether it's worth upgrading to SmartLink. I have it enabled on my 16 plate vRS but with an iPhone it isn't too useful as Apple are extremely choosy about which apps you can use with Car Play - Google Maps is not an option, for example.

However, my understanding is that Android Auto is nowhere near as restricted, so can be a lot more useful.

I had it activated on my Amundsen last Friday, £150 and all done in 25 minutes. The CarPlay is great but very limited, hopefully Apple will eventually open things up so that more apps can use it. I tested Android Auto which is a bit more open but felt a bit clunky to use.
