Leaking sump plug and dampers - newbie needs advice

Recommended Posts

Ok so pretty new to the forums and I have only been driving for 5 years so not the most knowledgeable with cars but learning everyday.

Anyway, I have a 14 plate skoda Octavia elegance 1.4, which I brought around this time last year.

Yesterday I took the car to get a dsg remap. The garage had the car for a day and when I went to pick it up today, they said they didn't do it. They spoke to shark and shark said there was no point as it was already pretty well optimised and I wouldn't gain anything. I appreciated that he didn't just take my money.

Ok so here is my concern. The garage said that I did have a substantial oil leak and also there was an issue with the dampers. Can't remember if he said they were leaking or worn. For the oil, he said they checked the cap and it was sealed tight so it wasn't that.

Now, my car had an MOT (first one for the car) done at a local garage (Luton) only a week a go. 3 days later it had a full service done at skoda in Milton Keynes. Car has done 22,000 miles.

question,

I haven't looked at the issues reported myself but if they are genuine issues, Should they not have been picked up during service/MOT?

Just trying figure out if someome was lazy and didn't do their job properly. The garage that found the issues did say they would backup me up if I spoke to skoda in Milton Keynes.

Sometimes oil leaks don't bother mot testers sometimes they advise you but a service should have picked it up.Both should have picked up the issues with the dampers and mot should have failed or advised.

May have been some oil spilled during the service, when topping up or changing the filter maybe. I've had it done to mine, they spilled it over the cam covers and all around the coil packs, they had mopped most up, but some was still in the hollows of the cover.

Have a look around yourself with a torch, check the oil level on the dipstick. Also check the dampers with a torch, they may be weeping or misting a bit of oil,  but that usually doesn't happen within 3 years, unless its done very high miles. usually 7/8 years mark, dampers can start to fail.

Sounds almost to me like the garage that looked at the DSG is trying it on, for some work.

Skoda should have noticed and reported on these issues, if they were present at service.

My first thoughts were the same and thinking they wanted some work out of me but he didn't seem too bothered by it and didn't even try to sell the idea about them doing any work on it. it was more of an FYI and he did seem really friendly.

Paranoia started to creep in because when i reversed off the drive this morning I could see 3 small oil patches. Started to ask myself is they were there before or are they fresh!

I have checked the space I parked in at work and it was clear so when I drive off tonight I will see if anything is there.

I will take a peek at the weekend.
