First 50 miler

Featured Replies

Completed my first 50 miler on Saturday. Also managed a top 10 Strava segment and nearly 50mph

I'm hoping to sign up for a 100 mile charity ride, just need confirmation of a date for foot surgery. Had a slight issue with a clicking front wheel when standing up putting power down, I took the wheel off and refitted and it didn't do it anymore, very odd!

On that last mention of the clicking Mike, my mtb had a similar noise that took me ages to find where the noise was coming from.

Eventually, after a fair number of missed heartbeats whilst riding, after pulling my head up from the side of the bike trying to locate as the noise was frustrating the hell out of me, I found it was the seat-post clicking.

After removing, cleaning and with a smear of grease, the clicking disappeared, thankfully.

Only done one charity ride, in my twenties - Ilkeston to Skegness (Rugby ground iirc) and 92 miles completed in just over 4 hours with an average speed of 21.6 mph.

Chuffed really as I finished 11th out of circa 70 riders of which 30 ish were club riders, and me and my mate had never ridden in clubs.

Good luck with yours if you get to do it..........

Can't be seat post as it only happened when I was out of the saddle. Wheels are new so if it happens again I'll send it back. That's a good time for a long ride, was it flat? I'm looking at doing once around the Cotswold's not sure how hilly it will be! There are lots of good climbs near me which I really enjoy as it pushes you harder.

It was a bit up and down with a few climbs but no really big hills.

On one climb I was struggling a bit so decided to drop into small (granny) ring.........I thought I would drop back a bit hoping to save a little energy and make it back at the top. Never been strong on climbs, but I ended up sailing past a good few riders up the hill and was really surprised by that.

Used to ride just two of us, and when we hit a hill Simon would just carry on as if still on the flat, leaving me behind, but he promised to stay with me on the Charity ride.

However on this occasion, due to the distance, it was me leaving him behind, luckily we got in with other riders and split into two groups, so he didn't mind.

On the last run into Skegness, on a very long straight road I could see a few riders catching up with me.

A separate rider joined from a side road and tucked in behind me saying he had just done about 30 miles and was thankful of the break, I told him where I had come from and that it was for charity (did have the CR t-shirt on) and he took the wind, keeping my position to the finish line. Loved it.

Check you cable tail ends as they sometimes click when flicked against spokes or cranks.

Or try one of the nearly 400 posts on here:

I got my first 50 miler in years this weekend, also on a Planet X. Started riding again about 6 weeks ago with three mates, two of us on road bikes and two on hybrids. Overall time was crap as we kept slowing down, or doubling back for the guys on hybrids. However, while they were twiddling on the granny ring up the steeper hills I road alongside in 4th or 5th, plunging, so still got a good leg workout. Beautiful weather, cracking views over the South Downs and good company. Have been looking at potential 100k routes for this weekend...

Cool, I do love my Planet X, doesn't stop me looking at new bikes though! It's amazing how quickly the speed comes, I'm trying to crack the 20mph average over a 20 mile distance. I've also got quite a few local KOM's on Strava!

Enjoy mate
