Alternator clutch pulley

Featured Replies

Hi folks,

Can these be retrofitted?  I purchased the wrong one (mentioned 1.8t compatability), but I have noticed the alternator actually uses a solid pulley.

What are the benefits fo a clutch one?

Cheers

Not really possible (or worthwhile) to retrofit one to a vRS, think the alternator shaft will be different, as will the characteristics of the pulley. They are basically there to dampen out fluctuations in the auxiliary belt system created by the crankshaft as it rotates (which isn't a smooth movement by any means when you slow it right down). These fluctuations cause the belt to pull on the power stroke as the crank rotates, and this can cause the tensioner to "bounce", the clutch pulley acts to dampen this effect, leading to a smoother belt run and more comfort in the drive belt system. They are more common in diesels than petrol due to the inherent nature of the diesel combustion cycle (and it's higher likelihood of crank vibrations)

Thanks for the detailed explanation, ill have to put the other on ebay!

Im trying to fnd the cause of a deep rumbling/resonating which comes and goes, you can feel it through the floorpan.  Its getting annoying, wondering now if its the driveshaft...

No problem.

When does it occur? When driving, idling? Is it more obvious one side or the other?

Seems to be the drivers side from beneath the floorpan somewhere.  Driving, nothing wrong with gear changes or any weird whines either.  Does it in neutral when rolling too or in gear
