Octavia mk2 2lt diesel TURBOCHARGER problem

Featured Replies

Just started to hear a pronounced whine at low revs which two people have identified as the turbo bearing on its way out!

Does anyone know how much it's likely to cost to have a garage replace this?

I'm told that the oil supply & extract tubes should be replaced as they'll probably be 'carboned up' but will the complete turbocharger require replacing or is it possible just to replace the damaged bearing?

Are reconditioned turbos available for this car?  Are they much cheaper than a new one?

My last Octy had this go. The symptons were like a emergancy unit was comeing up from somewhere in the distance. The performance was normal.Anyway took it to dealer to find out ,they said it was on the way out.At this time I do not have the invoice as I passed it on so apart from going back On the forum where I must have said it the price was about £900+. As for recondition I have never been down that road. Best of luck.

Don't have experience of your particular model, but you will be looking at rebuilding your turbo or an exchanged rebuilt turbo or a new replacement turbo to fit to your car. Yes, oil supply pipes should be replaced.  Due to all the work involved at getting to the bearing and the dismantling of the turbo itself,  it would not be economic or wise just to replace the bearing. I doubt anyone would undertake for you anyway.

No idea if these suppliers are any good, conduct your own due dilligence or call some remanufacturers direct but one advantage of having a driveline in large circulation quantities, is an abundance of parts, at what looks like reasonable prices.  Of course, you need to factor in removal of old and re-fitting.

Ive had turbos from euro car parts. Think I got the remanafractured ones. Hadent had a problem with them.
Payed £400 ish for them but you do get a rebait of £70! :)

The garage I use charged me a couple of hundred quid if I remember rightly.

my octy has whined for 100k lol.

I know the VNT on my car needs replacing. I would replace with a Hybrid from Turbo Technics. I think was £675 + £45 for the feed lines. And sending my VNT back I get a 250 refund.

Just got to find some one to fit it, as I'm told that after 150k that its very likely that some of the studs may shear off due to the time installed and the heat cycles they go through.

not only that once replaced with a hybrid I can have it mapped to 170 bhp.

happy days

The standard turbo's remap to 170bhp as the VRS was 170bhp from factory and used the same unit, no need for hybrid.

The normal problem with them is the boost controller, if it's got the black plastic on the controller it will stop boosting properly, skoda dealers now fit a modified turbo which has a metal cover over the boost control sensor so doesn't have problems unless the the turbo isn't treated correctly.

I always used to start mine and let it idle for a minute so the turbo got and oil supply, when i switched mine off i allowed it to idle for 2 minutes to spool down and cool, never ever had a turbo bearing fail, i do the same on my TSi now.
