I've had my Superb 2.0tdi 150  from new for 3 months, I am a firm believer to run my cars in.

I have got just over 12k now on the clock and it would appear at the moment that my car is using a 1ltr of oil every 5k.  I am hopeful that this usage will decrease with few more miles on the clock.

Just wondered if my oil usage is typical of what your cars are using.

 

 

Not put a drop in my 190 (in 23K miles)

Mines on 18k, used a litre and a half but it needs another litre now.

My 190 had a change at 1,100 miles and uses none between services.  Some do though and as long as it isn't much then the DPF won't start clogging.

Running cars is has not been required since the early 80's. the last car I bought that had strict instructions and a 1500 mile oil change was a Mk 2 Escort in 1980.

 

If you baby a new car too much you could well glaze the bores and once that has happened you will never get any where near the quoted power plus the car will always use oil. Only cure is an engine strip and deglaze with new rings. Its not covered under ant warranty.

 

All Skoda say in the handbook is not to use more than 3/4 max revs for the first 1000 km (650 miles?) and don't tow which in my book is driving normally and that is exactly how I have driven all my cars from new since the above mentioned Escort.

^^^ So that is 'Running In' then or 'Driving in' as Translation sometimes gets lost from Czech / German / Spanish to English.

The babying too much and glazing is such a load of BS that it is as wrong as Running In not been required since 1980.

There is more to running in cars than the engine obviously, but then some just go with the treat them as Demonstrators, Hire & Lease cars get treated.

Definitely not BS and I have had several manuals that specifically said that running in was not necessary. The 3/4 of max revs for the superb is the most restrictive I have seen for many years and as I said "only" being allowed to use 4500 revs is hardly restrictive.

 

I drove my Leon 1.4 TSi 140 normally from leaving the showroom, in 17,000 miles I never added a drop.

 

Had a Golf GTi that I did 113,000 miles in, drove normally from day one and never added a drop. That car had over 200,000 miles on it now with its current owner and still uses no oil. The engine is original and has never been touched.

 

So I ain't about to start running in engines now.

 

Changing the oil early will do no harm providing the correct oil is used.

You must be correct then since you have had several manuals that told you no engines need running in anymore or an easy start to life might be a good idea.

 

Nobody is even suggesting you change your ways, but you are suggesting others ignore recommendations that Manufacturers make in some Manuals.

But I am not suggesting anyone ignores Skoda and I will certainly be following their recommendations in the manual which are (yet again - what is so difficult to understand) "is not to use more than 3/4 max revs for the first 1000 km".

The Glazing bit is BS as is the no running in required since the 80's.  As simple as that.

Do what you want. I will follow the manual just like I always have done. As with all manufacturers Skoda know a thing or two about their cars.

Guys when I mentioned running in, I meant that I haven't thrashed the car, As you can imagine with the amount of miles I have done, it has all been mostly on the motorways.

My previous A4 used oil for the first 20k and then never used a thing, all I was trying to do is to see if our Superbs are oil users.

I read somewhere that the engine block is the same as the golf vrs  and they apparently had issues with using oil. 

Just completed 25K on my 15 plate 190bhp Estate.  Never needed a drop of oil between services.  I (being old fashioned) check the levels every week.  It gets driven fairly hard (once warmed up).

Added just under 1l of oil to a 2.0tdi Superb yesterday. Roughly 25km since last service. Not as worried now after reading this thread...

My previous Mark 7 Golf GTI used oil in the first 10k miles then not a drop after that. I drove it the way I would normally drive provided the oil was up around 90°C but it gave no benefit revving to the limiter as it ran out of puff up there! 

My current civic which is sitting around 50k used oil. Until I changed it at the last service to the oil I wanted to use (fuchs pro race S) it hasn't used a drop since! So, in my experience, the right oil makes a big difference
