Amundsen Map / Software Updates Not Available?

Featured Replies

Hello,

Sorry if this is in the wrong place (I've done my best to try and put it in the right place I think!).

I've had an Octavia VRS since MK III since 2013. I've actually not ever got around to updating my Satnav or software since then and just checked and the dealer hasn't done it ever as it's still got 2013 software version on it. However, when I enter my VIN online it tells me there's no software updates, or map updates available - when I'm certain there must be?

I was under the impression that they're free with the Amundsen for 3 years, but after reading in a few places I've seen mention that they're now free forever? Is there someone that can point me in the right direction or should I just head down to my local dealer and ask if they can do it for me?

Thanks,

Gaz

This may be a temporary issue with the update website as it is showing the same lack of updates issue for me whereas two weeks ago when I last looked updates were available.

I had the same problem with updates not appearing.  Initially, about 2 weeks ago, there were two possible updates shown for the maps whereas now there is nothing showing.

I was a little confused though as it said the last update was November 2016 and my car was built beginning of January this year so why were 2 updates even showing?

Just checked update site again and nothing showing.

Yes, last Thursday & Friday I followed procedure meticulously but having put the vin in the portal, the response I got was there are no maps for this vin & no software updates!

This is for an Oct 2015 reg Octavia Scout's Amundsen. Friday late afternoon I sent a "complaint"/help plea to Skoda UK ... nothing back yet. Sadly, my local dealer was unable to help.

This is an absolute pain in the proverbial since Wednesday afternoon I'm setting off on a road trip to Austria!

Portal now open!

am dl'ng ECE 1 2017 to a fast laptop, internet connection pretty mediocre at c.7.5 MB/s

Dl speed is massively retro @ between 805 - 750 KB/s which if memories of ancient times serves me well would have been blisteringly fast for a standard analogue telephone line!!!

Oh dear Skoda! Don't know where your servers are but this is seriously silly!

as I write, 770 KB/s, 3.15MB done of 12MB another 3hrs 33m to go!

This is not going well at all!

from the portal after vin accepted ...

1 moved slider on sd card to unlocked & inserted in laptop

2 deleted the files

copying to a new folder in case needing re-install

3 at great length downloaded the new file STD2_0739_EU1_2917.zip

to another folder on laptop using downloader.exe.

4 sought to transfer the dl new file to the sd card ... report not enough space on card.

5 checked card small file c 130k still there, 14.8GB free space but got a c88% download!

6 ok plan b ... again delete content from sd card & this time dl via downloaded from the portal. After a while, report says downloading to a file name on the sd card same as the one on the portal.

7 repeat6 but this time also remove the reported empty folder. But again, despite having checked the sd card has 24.8GB free get report not enough space.

Very puzzled since this original Skoda card only has 16GB capacity in all.

Any suggestions folks? Am setting off on my Austrian road trip about midday today!

In the meantime will try to restore the 2015/2016 map files!

In the meantime will try to restore the 2015/2016 map files! this has started, copying back 352 files slowly with seemingly no issues copying 352 files.

 sleep time!!?

As far as I know you have to use the original card and cannot replace it with another, even one with a larger size.  I tried and it would not work.

When I tried to update mine I deleted the contents of the card and then extracted the files using 7-Zip and then simply copied the files over.  The update completely replaces the contents as far as I understand.

Hope you get this sorted, it does not seem to be an easy process and the video on the portal site is so vague.

Thats what i did last week when i updated mine. Had to use original Skoda card (8gb) I tried doing it the week before to a new bigger card but would not work. You need to extract the 2 files with Z-zip as stated above. Then copy on to the formatted Original card.

The original Skoda SD card has some files in the secure area of the card (hence the name Secure Digital) that cannot be accessed or deleted using normal format programs.

Hi, I just put the sd card in the card reader and selected format on my pc. Then uploaded the 2 files on to it after I had used Z-zip and it worked on the Sat nav. I did not look for any hidden files. I presume they need to be on there for the system to recognise it.

forgot to post at time of writing! Now in Austria having successfully re-loaded the original map files but thank goodness also have taken my updated Garmin 1440 satnav.

comparing the 2 satnav was a bit sad with regards to the Amundsen capability in town & approaching motorway turnoffs.

However, going back to the update issues, the free space on the original Skoda card was shown as 14.8gb (not my original 24.8gb typo!) & from memory, the new mapping dl was indicated as c12gb & despite carefully repeating the deletion process on the original card, attempting to dl the new map reported not enough space! Indeed, one time it took 88% of it. So what is going on???

Typo

You need to extract the file using Z-zip before adding to the sd card.

My card is only 8gb. The 2 files wrte about 7.3gb for mine.

To be honest the roads probably aren't updated in the update anyway. I did mine and almost headed off the wrong way on a motorway that changed its exits, and they've been changed for well over a year! Nowhere near as up to date as Google or TomTom.

I dont think the German-designed VW satnav is intended for serious navigating. I treat it as a freebie on the radio which is nice to have on permanently as background map showing my location.  When I have tried to use it for serious navigation it takes me down impossible small roads and once across a rough track in the New Forest!

Buying a real American-designed satnav such as TomTom or Garmin and having two displays in the car seems to be a bit excessive. So I use Google maps on a 6" smartphone for serious navigation.

MartiniB thanks for the link. I watched the video but could not see any obvious advantage over Google Maps.

Google Maps shows me traffic speed (with incident feed from Waze) along my route. I live in the Google-sphere so along the route it shows places of interest that I have googled and my contacts locations . GM also has a search facility for cafes, parking, etc  where the results are shown on the map. Also a 'what's around here' facility.

But I have an open mind; what does Waze offer that Google Maps doesn't?

Google Map only "eating", but with Waze you can be active user -
feed the system:
report about incidents, fuel prices, police, speed cameras, edit map, report about closures

current Waze's beta versions also has POI search menu section,

but in previous versions were enough ask for 'cafes' directly in search box

on daily roads i use Waze, but on longer 1000+ km trips i use both of them

p.s.

Columbus as an option were selected just to have bigger screen not because i like builtin Navigation systems
