16 inch wheels on Vrs

Featured Replies

Thinking of going the smaller wheel route for higher profile tyre & more comfort. I quite like the BBS Motorsport type design, just wondering if anyone has downsized and if so what size tyre did you use to keep the same circumference? (Mk2 61 vRS) Thanks

Yes, I've done that using OEM 16x7.5 rims.

factory 16" tyre is 205/55r16 but I used a much bigger diameter 225/55r16 to compensate for the inaccurate speedometer (it was 10% out).

If I was doing it again, I'd either go with a 205/60r16 or a 215/55r16.

If you want comfort it might be cheaper to fit Koni FSD's, as they give a better ride quality over rough surfaces. But firm up when you want to push on a bit. Had them fitted on my Fabia VRS with Eibach springs and it handled brilliantly.

In a similar vein, I was looking to fit J7 16 ET42 wheels (from an Audi A4) with 205/55/16 tyres to my 1.9 tdi 2006 BXE. Can anyone advise if that is a suitable fit?

Fitting 205/55R16 tyres to wider 7J rims won't be as comfortable as fitting 205/55R16 tyres to narrower 6J or 6.5J rims.

If comfort is your goal, perhaps look at 6Jx16 rims with the standard ET50 offset. 6Jx16 ET43 and 6Jx16 ET48 are also available.

Fitting a 205/55R16 to a relatively narrow 6J rim, will also help protect the rim from kerbing damage as the sidewalls bulge out quite a bit.

To maximise the comfort with a 205/55R16 tyre size, don't over specify the tyres. For example, 205/55R16 91H should be more comfortable than 205/55R16 94V XL, all other things being equal.

I use 16" wheels with 205x55x16 winter tyres over the winter. Fit fine on the VRS. Plenty clearance with the standard calipers etc.

Thanks Carlston, a very comprehensive explanation.
