What Car? - Diesel Tests

Featured Replies

Hullo

Dad brought home a copy of What Car? last night, and in it was a 30 page pullout all about diesels. I scanned it over breakfast and it had some real insights into the costs/savings of using diesel cars instead of petrol. Most of the breakdowns showed that in the long run buying a new diesel car is more expensive in the long run, than a petrol (mainly due to higher RRP in the showroom)

Anyway, they reviewed various diesels in each category, and in the mini category, the new Fabia TDI 100PD, was up against 2 seats and another - I think it was a Hyundai - and the furby came out on top - given four stars out of five. To say I was chuffed was an understatement, that the TDI PD100 is still a good new buy (price is now under 11K too.)

I was a little miffed at the "sport" section, where the Fabia vRS came out below the likes of the Golf PD150 and the Audi A4 2.0 TDI... But, I guess the vRS is a cheaper car, and the reviewers were putting it into a category perhaps it's not suited to yet? - Only got 3 stars. :(

Anyway, if anyone wants to get a copy, they also reviewed the Octavia and the Superb in other diesel categories, but I can't remember how they did. I'll try and bring in the booklet tomorrow and post some more, but I'd recommend any diesel owners getting this issue of What Car? for this info alone.

All depends on mileage, Jason. I did my sums before I bought mine, and diesel was a no-brainer. I have to pay for my own fuel (no company fuel card), and based on the mileage I do it would have cost way more to run a petrol car. I suspect the What Car thing is comparing your average 10k per year driver's costs between petrol and diesel. The sums work out a lot differently if you up it to 20k or more per year (especially with longlife service intervals ;) ).

20K per year, yep, I know where you're coming from (45K in 28 months)

For me, a TDI was the obvious choice for the "long run" high mileage ownership.

i didnt buy diesel because i only do 11 to 13k per year and i would like to change my car every couple of years so it would cost me more in the long run

I bought the vRS because its a f**kin fast car for under 12k, it wont break down, and looks the bizz :D

I bought a petrol because I only do 55k per year :D

i presume they are work miles TaviaRS if so what job do you do

I bought a diesel because, quite simply.....I like Diesels

I have to say that I have a diesel because of the mielage that I cover per year (approx. 25K), but apart from a high performance petrol like the vRS Octavia (which I could have had), given the choice of a petrol v diesel, taking account of the co. car tax issue and the driveability of a diesel, it has to be a diesel! (oh + Jabba

:D )

John.

The only snag with my current car - the Octavia 1.9TDI is that every taxi firm in the area uses them! Does anyone else find that? When we visited the old town part of Hartlepool someone tried to flag us down too!

I'm moving to the Furby vRS because I think the engine is great, the PD version even greater and in a smaller car it's a lot more fun. Also many's the time in the Octavia that I've wished for a 6th gear and now that wish has been granted!

lol.. Faye the gurl racer ;)

Bought the vRS cause A-Hate 'normal' cars, and B-Gonna be doing 30k a year and the diesel is a no brainer for that sorta milage!

Now just need one of the tuners to come out with a turn on/offable mod chip and all will be well! ;)

You can get Boxes that go between the ecu and the injector control, they take 5 mins to fit and you can do it yourself no probs with just a spanner for the power wires, it's not a switch but it's the next best thing.
