Cycle carrier

Featured Replies

Can anyone recommend a cycle carrier that fits the Octavia hatchback? Think I'll eventually go for the tow bar option but looking for a carrier in the short term.

thanks in advance

Thule 591 ones are always good. They do other variations that clamp the forks dropouts which maybe better.

If you're going to be getting a tow bar version, which is the best option, I would go for that now as the costs of roof bars and bike rack aren't cheap

Another for 591's on roofbars here. I use one for taking my XL 29er to the weekly local club rides. Quick to fit and very adjustable to suit length of bike, and nearly all tyre sizes except fat bike straight out of the box. It does the job well but is not secure.

I have a towball carrier also which I prefer to use for big drives out into Wales to remote locations as it doesn't affect the fuel economy like a roof full of bikes does.

You can get decent second hand stuff as there is always loads available.

If you're carrying only for short journeys or want something cheaper in the short term then you might try a 'Delta bike hitch'. We've got four of these which we bought from Halfords for £18.99 (but they're on eBay at £24.99). They fit into the U channel on most bars and they're very sturdy.

We primarily use them to bolt our bikes to our boat trailer for our 2500 mile round trip to the South of France and they work a treat, but we also use them on the roof of our Yeti to carry all four bikes simultaneously!

I've just purchased an Atera Strada DL 3 (with extension for 4th bike)

as per Glosrich link above Roofbox is fountain of knowledge on choices and instructional videos, ordering was simple and quick delivery with options if you are out etc.

Wasn't cheap but wanted something well built and easy to clamp and lock without needing spanners or tightening and untightening various knobs etc.

Arrived today so will be taking it out at the weekend for a test drive.

Strong work - we'll need photos....
