Bonnet before and after

Featured Replies

Far from perfect, and probably still dirtier than a dirty day for the pros, but I'm happy with the results, except for the big one in the middle where I went through the clear coat AND base coat with the 2500 grit.  There was very little paint there anyway, so did what I could.

Before:

After a week's work of painting, lacquering, and sanding:

And after cutting, finishing, and a layer of Jetseal 109:

Again, far from perfect, but the chips are protected now and it saved me a £200 respray. I must have dotted in 100+ chips.  THe touchup paint was awful to work with: very thick and the sticks weren't great. They were paper based, not plastic, so they absorbed too much of the paint meaning I had to put on more than I needed each time.  Definitely recommend using a thinner.

I've had a bonnet chip session myself. Also found the paint far too thick, so mixed the paint with the lacquer and used a tooth pick to fill the chips, protruding of course, and wet sanded back before I took my rotary to it to finish it off.

It was a massive ball-ach of a job as I had a similar amount to sort like yourself, but very satisfying once done.

Good effort. :)

Cheers mate. Sorry for the thread necromancy, totally forgot I'd posted this! :D

Really good job! If you're going to do this again at some point I can recommend some paint touch up tips like these: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B00ATPNSKA/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1496487727&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=touch+up+tips&dpPl=1&dpID=311lvg4mfGL&ref=plSrch

The only way to describe them is they're like tiny dandelions! The paint doesn't glob to them and you can easily do a few chips at a time with them. I've done my own and the missus' car with these and they're probably the most handy thing I've bought in a while

Cheers dude, I'll check them out as I've still the wings and roof to do yet. The ones that came in the kit were rubbish.

Nice work - with some time and patience.... that's a great result!

Thanks mate! I made an epic mistake on the worst offender though. I sand too much and went through the colour coat. If you look really closely you can actually see exposed primer.  It's protected with lacquer so although it may not be the best cosmetically, it is at least now protected from rust.

I noticed recently in the summer sunshine that I could do with going over a couple of spots with the DA again, as they weren't quite as shiny as everywhere else. Again though, you'd have to know they were there to spot them.  I seriously want the bumper spray as it's appallingly bad; I'm not even going to attempt that manually. :/

Nice work!

Like the idea of those touch-up tips as well - but don't reckon I need 100 of them :)
