There is some super music on the computer but, having downloaded it, I can't play it in the columbus DVD. I take it I have to have a specific format, but what ??

Hey, are you playing it with CD or SD? 

CD, Sometimes I download a dvd. Plays wonderfull on the computer but not in the car.

does yr unit play dvds?

pretty sure your unit will only look for video on a dvd, not assume its storage..

Yes. I'm not a techy type, I need to find out the format of  a dvd that does play, then download music in that format.

The music needs to be in mp3 format. Once you have your tunes in mp3 format then copy them onto either an sd card, a cd, or a dvd, and your Columbus will play them.

I doubt the unit will detect MP3 files on a DVD disc but easy to try

 

Ive put EVERY queen album on 1 CD in MP3 format

The map updates are done via a data DVD so it does read MP3 files from a DVD.
