Recent poor experience with RAC. (And Skoda)
I have been with RAC for a good many years. Membership is Personal (including wife) so it means that any car I am in, whether I own it or not,will get the service of Roadside breakdown and recovery rescue. Last Sep 2016 my renewal was £144.75

Recent experience....breakdown in petrol Skoda Yeti 1.2 Tsi which has done 40,000 miles and regular dealer service when it juddered badly, with power loss so I pulled over and stoped. I was within about 2.5 miles of home and same distance from good known local garage (member of the good garage scheme and RAC approved repair garage) in the wilds of NW Devon.
RAC called at 2300 and told waiting time would be around 70 minutes!! We sat waiting till about 0030 with no information so I called RAC again and was advised man should be with us within 15 minutes. Nothing. They called us back some time later (about 0100?) and said surprised man was not with us!
Eventually at 0200 a flatbed rescue truck turned up..thats 3 hours and getting colder.....the man said he had no equipment to plug into the diagnostics!! He said "I am only contracted to the RAC....their breakdown men do not work over night....I only do recovery......where do you want to go?"
Dilemma. Due to the VAG group saga of covering up poor 1.2 engine timing chain design leading to stretched chains and many wrecked engines (leading to many unwitting owners paying out £4000 + for replacements) my wrecked engine had been replaced, after much hassle and denial, by Skoda totally at their cost and since niw engine is less than a year old I thought it was wiser to return the car to the dealer though they were 27 miles away in case there was any damaged internals (valve stuck/plug us etc.). Dealer diagnosed 1 defective plug lead and advised to replace all of them which I eventually agreed. The bill for this came to £219.41 (£100 an hour labour charge) + my time and petrol to collect the car.
The Local garage has since confirmed that they could have diagnosed the problem and fixed it easily with maybe a delay to next day while they obtained a new lead (or set); so had an RAC breakdown man come initially I feel he would have similarly diagnosed the problem and even if he had no suitable plug lead he could have taken me to the local garage......they charge £40 an hour and the plug lead set would have been around £19 for a good quality set (NGK?) instead of the £72.84 + VAT = £87.40.......good quality manufacturers item?????  yet the original only lasted 40,000 miles!!

Is NGK a recognised good quality plug lead? What others are recognised as good quality to trust?

Further the local garage looked at the lead and on seeing the rather corroded look of the terminal where it plugs into the coil pack said that that was probably the cause of the failure.......I have yet to clean it up and refit it to test if lead is really defective.  (question anything to look out for if I do substitution test putting supposed duff one back on for a check after cleaning the coil pack end terminal??

So attendance by a proper RAC breakdown van would almost certainly have diagnosed the problem and I would have taken it to the man up the road and saved me a great deal of time and money.
Letter of complaint shortly going to RAC and I feel I will be changing to "Start Rescue".....can anyone  confirm they are good?

 

Yet another dissatisfaction with SKODA main dealer from a high cost point of view.

 

I like the Yeti as a car but have been thinking it a bit too small for the odd long load and have been thinking next car would be an Octavia estate  but with all the hassle I have had with Skoda (non) Customer service and various faults large and small I think I will probably go for the Dacia largest estate......cheap and cheerful so at least less likely to waste my time and money......also less gimmicks and unwanted toys to go wrong.
