Opinions on potential new motor

I am in urgent need of a new motor as i'm starting a new job on Monday and i have had to give my old company car back. I've been looking for a low mileage 2012 ish plate TSI VRS but without much luck. I have previously owned a petrol vrs with dsg and it was great. However I have come across a 62 plate dsg diesel vrs at my local skoda dealer and it's been specced up to include upgrade alacantra heated seats, xenon lights, sat nav and front and rear sensors and it's priced at £9990 with 64k. The reason I was looking for a petrol is my new place of work is only 4 miles away from home but I will be doing customer visits around Norfolk during the week. I had ruled out the diesel but after a lot of research on the forum it appears that the dpf isn't such an issue on the CR170 as long as it has an occasional longer run. 

 

Where my doubts start to come in is buying a used car at around 10k with a personal loan payment each month which could potentially suffer expensive DSG or DMF issues in the relatively near future. I would get a 1 year warranty on the approved used scheme however. 

 

I guess my question is just how reliable is the CR170 from this mileage onwards (in general)? I would make sure the cambelt and water pump is changed along with a DSG oil change.

 

My alternative is a 2011 Mazda 6 Sport 2.0 Petrol for £7500 and only 31k miles. I know the Mazda is the sensible buy with very little to go wrong but I just loved my previous VRS.

But either and it will be good. As long as the diesel gets a run it won't mind 4 miles to the office. Normal stuff like maintenance, cam belts to check! 

I'd see if you can get some discount on that VRS, £9990 is a lot of money on a 62 plate with 64k on the clock.i paid £7k for a 10 plate L&K but tghe miles a below average ate 55k and it has Xenon's and heated half leather/alcantara seats plus rear parking sensors. The CR170 engines are fairly bullet proof, but the DSG box can have problems and the was some tpi's and recall's on them.

 

The Mazda 6's are also very good, but not as practical or as nice to drive as the octavia, saying that i had a 6 on my list when i was looking for a replacement for my old Octavia.

Thanks. I think the price reflects the fact is's approved used from a main dealer. I know it would be less on an independants forecourt or private. Will not stop me haggling if I decide to go for it though. Do main dealers haggle much?

Any dealer haggles and I am sure you could knock them down a bit. I haggled on an 8 month old car before and got £2500 off the price.

Ive done 20k in my vrs dsg without a single issue.

Used cars are a lottery whatever the make.

The price isnt overly expensive for a dsg diesel vrs though.

I couldnt shift my cr vrs dsg for 9k and that had only done 40k and has every option available.

I came to the conclusion it was too expensive for a private cash sale.

I didnt want to give it away or trade it in so kept it as a second car.

Also the 6 speed dsg fitted is very reliable unlike the later 7 speed version.

Dont confuse the two boxes.

Does the dpf have an estimate life span on the CR170 and likewise with the DMF?

Like all parts on used cars it depends on how the cars been used.

Clutch and dmf changes are rare on dsg cars anyway 

As for dpf its an issue on all diesels so it will require maintenance on which ever car you buy but its pretty good on cr engined cars

Yeah i thought that was the benefit of DSG!

Ive never had a skoda or vag of any description before i bought my octavia.

I generally change cars yearly so have had a few cars too.

My vrs is one of only a few cars ive bonded with and enjoy driving.

Its been faultless and still continues to be and ive found this forum very helpfull along with its members.

Id now have another skoda without question.

 

 

Oh and my car is exactly the same as the one you are viewing

Thanks. That's how I felt with my petrol VRS and I only sold it to release some cash. You know they are good when you look around and can't find anything that you would rather be driving for less than 25k. They simply have a great balance of everyday practicality and superb dynamics. I always loved the steering, strange you might think but i've often had jap cars which I can't criticise as they have been superb but they do lack the feel of the vrs. The problem is however the VRS I have seen is 2-2.5k more expensive than the mazda and with twice the mileage. It's sensibility vs enjoyment.

I paid 10k for mine 16 months ago with 32k on the clock.

As you say i could have got a mazda of same age and mileage but 2k cheaper.

But id have to live with it.

I have no regrets .

A lot of the pricing seems to be geographical. When looking around cars are noticeably more expensive where I live (Norwich) than identical cars in areas which are more built up i.e midlands, london, North of england.

Id go with the Octavia anyday over the Mazda. The Octy looks so much better and mine is a white Estate so the colour choice is spot on. I drive literally less than a mile to work but do lots of driving to see family in Warrington and days out etc. I have had no issues with the dpf in over 5000 miles and 8 months of ownership. The CR170 is a fantastic engine as std and even better with a stage 1 map. I cant fault it for value.

The geographic pricing reflects the local market but I have found its (perhaps unsurprisingly) different for different makes and models. The answer is to be prepared to travel for the right car and don't let long distance travelled cloud your judgement. The vrs is on the slightly high side at 10k but its a lot of car...

I live in leicester and bought mine in Southampton.

All the local ones were dogs.

The one i bought had xenons and the black alcantara which clinched the deal.

Well this particular VRS has been ruled out. Went to the dealer yesterday morning to discuss the car and potentially put down a deposit. I was told that there were no sales people free and that they would call me later in the day when someone was available. No call came so this morning I waited outside the gates until opening time and then found out they sold the car yesterday afternoon!

 

Currently driving my wifes 58 plate Toyota Auris which doesn't really give off the right image for my new job so that's why there is some urgency to get a motor sorted.

Keep looking, there are some good ones out there if you search hard enough.

I looked at around 50 FL and Pre - FL VRS before finding mine at my local Skoda dealer ship as approved used.

The screen price for the one I bought was £8995 for a manual 2010 CR with 63k on the clock and with a bit of haggling and my part ex I paid £7495 cost to change which I thought was a steal.

luckily time was not a factor for me which I appreciate your short on, however you never know where they will pop up, I had been for lunch at the pub next door to the dealership and saw it on the forecourt as I was leaving.

I guess its all in the timing.

I couldnt shift mine and it was better specced,lower mileage and cheaper than the 10k one.
