XENON HEADLIGHTS ALIGNMENT?

Featured Replies

Hello,

Is it nessacery to proceed in a new headlights alignment upon replacing the bulbs on the factory xenon headlights?

These will be removed prior to install new bulbs.

If it will be done carefully,  and then place back the headlights into position you think the beam will be modified/change?

Thank you.

I'm no expert but I would expect that if new bulb and the headlight are seated correctly then any difference in  beam would be accounted for by the headlights own control sensors. Isn't the little dance that the lights do when switched on the sensors ensuring the beam is correct?

It should be OK but I'd still have it checked.

Mostly as there is nothing to say the alignment was correct before you removed the bulbs. It's quick and cheap enough to have the alignment done :)

I'm sure that you need VCDS to do the alignment on factory Xenons. Could be wrong though :wondering:

You should use it to set the beam accurately as it sends a "car level" signal to the range motors so they can then have full travel adjustment for varying loads, however, at my last MOT they just adjusted the alignment without using it

VCDS (or any other suitable diagnostic device) is used to put the headlamp controller in 'Basic Settings' i.e. all corrections are removed and the headlamp is put in a default position. You then set the mechanical adjustment while the lamp is in that position before setting the controller back to normal operation.

The reason this is done is that the range control system has a limited range of correction it can apply and if the basic mechanical setting is too far off you could hit the limit of the automatic correction and still be misaligned.

Correct!

The alignment procedure for this kind of headlights need VCDS as it is not like the traditional halogen headlights which they are simply manually adjusted directly using the screws on the lights. Xenon and with dynamic cornering and bending function are controlled electronically by ECU controller and need to place them in adjusting position via entering their controller in VCDS prior having the standard 'home position' alignment.

After completing adjustment with the screws on them, then need to press save option in VCDS and then that position of the projectors is stored as home/initial position in controller.

After that, every time the engine is started, the projectors will stay the point last adjusted as above after the start-up check of the projectors.

BTW, has anyone tried the Philips xenon extreme vision GEN 2 bulbs?

The are said to be even more better than the excellent previous Extreme Vision..

shouldn't be any need to adjust the headlamp beam patterns' after changing the xenon bulbs, the only time they need resetting is after suspension work or after accident repair.

Just for reference, after driving out for some nights I saw (or have understood) that the beam/alignment has not been modified due to extraction of the headlights units...

It has remained the point they were as before.

The Philips xenon extreme vision Gen2 are great! Much of difference on the road to what you see and how the spectrum applies and sleep wider optical better view..
