Fabia Airbags - Where they deploy

Featured Replies

Well thought as they havn't taken the car away yet I may as well make use of my missfortune and get some piccys for people. So here for those who ever wondered (i know I have) where the airbags deploy from after all I bet we've all sat looking at the little airbag symbol thinking hmmmm does it shoot throigh there or does steering wheel flip open?? etc etc.......

Interesting to see where the passenger one comes from. Not so interesting to see that obviously you were involved in a crash. Hope all's well.

I must admit I was curious where they came from, very interesting to see, I looked at my steering wheel and you can slightly make out where the marks are for the opening flap. I dunno why but its quite reassuring seeing those pics for some reason, we all know they are there but its different seeing them out.

What type of sensors do airbags have, is it seatbelt tension, g-force or impact – I have no idea and feel like being educated today :D

Must of shaken you up a bit, I hear they have a bit of a bang when they go off

Thought ud be interested, i know i always wondered ho they work and now I do.... so thought I may as well show people with photos.

Certainly is very very well built the furby all i can say is... Skoda if you ever read this... PLEASE PLEASE fit bigger brakes to lower spec cars we need to stop as quick as any high performance car.

Good cars furbys certainly strong.

Were they noisy when they inflated?

interesting pictures,thanks.

Given Rich's car is a comfort spec I think he had to inflate them himself before the moment of impact, iirc they come with a handpump under the steering wheel.

I hope he's going to remove all the pikey mods befor ethe insurance man comes round ;)

When airbags were first being used i watched a programme about the experiences had when they were deployed.

Basically it said if you drive with the seat quite a way forward (like me) you run the risk of serious damage to yourself when the airbag opens because you are way too close to it. I know it's a benefit/risk thing but it worries me a little :o

Obviously it was the car's fault and you weren't really too slow to react or following too close behind ;):rofl:

Do you think 16' wheels actually reduce the effectiveness of standard brake? I fitted 16' VRS alloys on my 1.4 16v as well, never feel the ABS switched on since then.

Really sorry to see what happened to you and your car.

he pulled out from behind a bus straight across my path luckly in front of many police witnesses.

As far as ABS goes working fine and dandy always kicking in... to much so if anything.

You need to get the glovebox out, and if you look up behind it you'll see the airbag unit attached to two metal sticky out bits with a two bolts in each. :) I assume if you disconnect the electric plug, and undo these 4 bolts, the airbag unit should come out OK. Then it can be chucked away or kept for prosperity's sake or something? You learned how to get the airbag unit / horn bit off the steering wheel yet? ;)

yup airbags off wheel, easy peasy that.. power off then wheel 90 degrees release catch wheel 180 degrees release other catch

Then get that dash out now. You should leave the airbag controller exposed in the middle then. :)

shall keep you posted

Dunno what they sound like, the sound of car on car drowns it out - but this is what they feel like:

That caused by the plastic casing?

very loud explosion

The pic makes it look a bit worse than it was. It was more of a graze/burn as airbag material opened up whilst my hand was on the wheel. Seems to be a fairly common airbag injury from what I gather. I don't know what specific part of the construction it was that made contact with my wrist.

As I'm sure you know, an airbag inflates and deflates incredibly quickly - it's gone before you realise what's happened. Not at all like the Ferrari Nic Cage steals in "The Rock"... :)
