Original shock absorber 6Q0413031BH from Furby 6Y2 1.4L 74kW petrol...it's gas or oil type?

Seems like oil type since rod doesn't comes out themselves + there's no marks like "Don't drill" or "Gas filled" on it...

I believe they are oil filled, judging by the amount that leaked out of mine when they went

Gas dampers still have oil in them.

I'm thinking it might be a non-gas one as it's not listed as gas but some others are.

 

Yeah, should be oil filled; was asking just because dead gas filled could (??) act like good oil filled haha (rod doesn't comes out)- but mine's are ok.

Accordingly, found answer why ZF online cat (Boge/Sachs) for standard suspension offers only oil filled for front and gas filled- for rear.

 

Purpose of all dismounting/mounting was broken spring (1/2 of lower thread broke in Monday)- thks to age 10 years / 230k km and nice Latvian roads, damn.

Now am driving with Lesjofors springs ;-)

Strut upper bearing+rubber still was in pfct condition- left them as it is (just washed and re-greased bearing).

Since no-one's actually said this, the damping medium in all dampers (include the struts in Citroen Hydropneumatic and Hydractive here) is oil.

 

What are sometimes erroneously called "gas filled" dampers are actually "gas pressurised dampers". In these, the "air space" above the damping oil is above atmospheric pressure, to raise the boiling point of the oil.

 

@indars is correct that a gas pressurised damper that leaks the pressure chamber will act like a normal damper.

True, mate; that's just a matter where we will place oil when rod will move in-out.

Bit' out of topic- but that's from my daily job hehe > three possibilities how to place boom/stick/bucket when checking hydr.oil level for excavator ;-)
