Am I correct in thinking that the rear left hub needs replacing?

Sounds like the abs sensor ring which is integral to the hub so yes, you may want to change both at the same time.  Check wiring and plug connections probably before removing hub...

Thanks for your prompt reply it does seem like the ring when stationary self test clears it as soon as I move it comes on again.

Yes new hub (annoyingly!) fixes this issue.

Ok I have an update, I have bought a new sensor and a wheel bearing, swapped out the sensor and that has fixed the issue looks like the old one was rubbing against something, perhaps something has gone in between the ring and the sensor recently hence it threw up the error code.

Took me approx half an hour to get the old sensor out, this one being the original was sitting in there for 12 years as you can imagine the wheel hub can get really hot at times with other weather conditions to consider etc. All I have to say is that the replacement part moulding is a complete joke! I couldn't even fit it through the hole let alone get into the grooves of the hub. I had no choice I had to sand it down into shape, the original top part was thinner (smaller) and groove lines a lot thinner etc. I gave the hole a good sandpaper clean with a drill bit wrapped in sandpaper etc. It goes to show that some parts out there should never even make the market and they are selling these for £70. Mind you I got a 55% off on a weekend deal at GFS but still they are making money on parts that still need modifications!

I recently replaced rear wheel bearings and there was rust/dirt, which blocked ABS sensor. Check out first. It was simply cleaning for proper ABS function before I switched this useless assistant again :-D
