Occy VRS 170 PD 08 rough idle white smoke and smells of fuel

I have an Occy as above, now it has been in to three garages with the above issues, one said it was over filled with oil and needed an oil change but didn't have time to do it. So as a quick fix I drained some oil out without fixing the problem. So the second garage said it was probably injectors and it wasn't really worth doing it as it could eat money and wouldn't pass the MOT. I didn't want to accept writing off a £3500 car. So I took it to another garage we used to use a bit further aaway, they checked it and soaked the egr valve over night and MOT'd it which it passed with no advisories. Now the problem is it is still doing it, fair bit of white smoke out the exhaust and smells of fuel. So what next? I'm thinking oil change and filter changes before injectors as I really don't want to have to go down that route, has anyone got any other ideas?

Has your car had the injector recall on the PD engine? Depending on where you are I would take it to a specialist who can datalog what the engine is doing.

I don't know, how could I tell I've only had it 6 months? At least two of the garages ran diags on it without any fault codes if that's what you mean, or is there a more in depth test they can do on the injectors etc?  Many thanks for the reply.

Basic diagnostics machine's don't always pick up fault codes, perhaps find some one local with VCDS is this can read all systems on the car. look up the list on here for some one local to you.

@Norgs You say you have white smoke. Since the engine hasn't seized I'll ignore turbo seal failure as a cause of the smoke.

 

Is this all the time or just on start up? If it's all the time I'll agree with @Ju1ian1001 that you need a VCDS examination of the injection. If it's just on start up, I think it's probably one or more weak or failed glowplugs.

You need to read the injector part numbers to decipher if it was done under the recall, injector seals could well be knackered tho! 

A problem like this need to be diagnosed by a real mechanic that has experience is competent with the PD engine and fuel system. No point taking it somewhere for them to guess at things and throw parts at it. Could be as simple as the injector wiring loom, it is quite common.

 

And also a big +1 for a proper VCDS scan and some serious logging

Had the white smoke on mine too, run a VDCS scan, said it was the crank sensor, got one looked where it was (behind oil filter housing), then battery started to play up, so changed battery, no more white smoke, still didn't do the crank sensor tho.

Thanks for the replyies guys, I have messaged about getting VCDS run. The smoke it less when warm so it could possibly be glow plugs as I noticed in the winter it was a bit hard to start.

A vcds scan would also see what resistance each glow plug has. 

White smoke with a smell of fuel points to unburned fuel. It's quite likely an injection timing issue - a dodgy crank position sensor could certainly cause this since the ECU uses that data to control the precise timing of the fuel injection events.

 

Being a PD where the basic timing is mechanical, it may also be useful to have the cam-crank timing double checked - any idea when the timing belt was last changed and if it was done using lockdown tools per VW procedure?

Have you called a main dealer? If anything was done under a recall, I would imagine it would have to have been done by a main dealer and it should be recorded on the Skoda database against the car.
