before i buy what should i check  on 2012 diesel 2.0 tdi cr 140

The DPF and the EGR cooler valve assembly status.

Unfortunately not really possible.

Check if it's had the EA189 engine update.

How many miles?

Manual or DSG?

Low mile city vehicle may not be that desirable compared to one from county areas that get frequent long hot runs frinstance.

Paint bubbles/zink inclusions on doors.

As said, can depend on mileage and gearbox. As well as spec.

But usual used car checks apply anyway - general condition, signs of damage and check for any evidence of accidents around the bodywork, under the bonnet and below the boot floor. Also for any signs of more 'rigourous' off-road use.

Service History and paperwork checks. Does the VIN match up with the V5 registration document, for example? Check all vehicle functions - press all buttons and test everything, e.g. electric windows, heated seats (if fitted).

Always useful to take someone else along as well - 2 pairs of eyes always helps.

And don't forget to check the aircon is working properly.

Are you suggesting the update is a good thing to have, or a bad thing to have ?

Personally I'd prefer to look for one that's not had it done.

^^^ Good plan.

Do you really, really need a diesel? First reports of diesel used values wavering and with increased awareness of NOx and particulates coupled with pending financial penalties against diesels it is worth just taking a minute to make sure you really need a diesel.

Every cloud, silver lining and all that = remap time
