degreasing cooling system

Featured Replies

Hi all, Not Skoda related, But last year had to have the cylinder head gasket replaced on daughters Citroen C2,, There's still ''gunge'' in the expansion tank so i was wanting to clean the whole system out and refill with fresh antifreeze mix.. I have read on various forums about using dish washer fluid to degrease the cooling system,  Any advice on whats best to use ?

How much is a Citroen expansion tank? I know a Skoda one is under £20.

As for the rest of the system, flush it and keep flushing until the water runs clear.

I would take the thermostat out if its easy to get, that way your not waiting while it gets up to temperature before the radiator is flushed.

Thanks for the replies, New tank is about £30,  I used all sorts in the end ranging from mild bleach to bicarbonate of soda . Its eventually cleared after continued flushing, Its now refilled, just got to get rid of the air locks now.. Thanks guys.

@Doofy Well, my old ZX (1.4TU) required a header tank to refill the coolant because the pressure cap was below the heater. You can probably make something out of a 2.0l milk carton if the C2 is the same, and it looks like it could be.

Correcting nonsense words.

Usually you flush system with hosepipe. Flush via rad hose both one way, then the other, (Back-flush), until the water flows clean, Letting the lot drain back out. Perhaps an expansion tank could be removed quite easily and washed indoors, like a bit of washing up.I wouldn't risk bunging dish washer fluid or washing up liquid into the car though, might be a sod to remove and foam up, etc. I think you can get propriety flushing cleaners from auto factors etc. I think dishwasher stuff won't foam as much but I'd still give it a swerve.
